Selling Sunset's Mary Fitzgerald reveals she was drugged and raped when she first came to Los Angeles in heartbreaking new memoir

As a devoted fan, I find myself deeply moved by Mary Fitzgerald Bonnet’s courage and resilience as she shares her heart-wrenching yet inspiring journey through her memoir. Her story is a testament to the human spirit’s ability to endure, heal, and ultimately thrive in the face of adversity.

In her recently published memoir, Mary Fitzgerald Bonnet from the show “Selling Sunset” shares intimate details about her past experiences involving sexual assault and teenage pregnancy

As a passionate advocate for transparency, I, at 44, share my journey and the challenges I’ve faced, hoping it will serve as a beacon of hope for others. It’s my sincere belief that there’s always a ray of light waiting at the end of every tunnel

Selling Sunshine: Surviving Teenage Motherhood, Thriving in Luxury Real Estate, and Finally Finding My Voice, hits bookstore shelves on September 24.

‘There were so many days where I would just cry and say, “Why does it have to be this hard?” But I just wouldn’t give up,’ she told Us Weekly, adding, ‘I wanted to give other people hope.’

As a devoted reader, I find myself moved by Mary’s words in her latest work. She openly shares her personal journey following a miscarriage last year, detailing the hardships she faced with infertility. However, she doesn’t dwell on these difficulties; instead, she expresses her hope that her experiences can serve as a beacon of help for others who might find themselves in similar situations

And while she got very candid in her memoir, there were some things she left out.

In my original account, there were a few points I chose not to include as they carried a significant emotional weight for me, mainly to avoid causing discomfort or embarrassment, especially towards my son Austin, who is 27 years old

At 15, Mary found herself pregnant, an event that led to her being ostracized by the community in the small town of Indiana where she had been raised

‘Things happen for a reason,’ she said.

No matter where I ventured, I found myself in a similar situation – accompanied by a child and being scrutinized. It was quite painful, yet this experience has equipped me to handle criticism more effectively, as it is a regular part of our show’s landscape. Unbeknownst to me at the time, these encounters were preparing me and toughening my skin

The real estate agent shares that not long after settling in Los Angeles, she fell victim to a drug-facilitated sexual assault perpetrated by an individual she knows as ‘Joe.’

Bonnet acknowledged that it continues to impact him. He added that, unfortunately, it might not completely disappear from his life

She said that one of the ways it still affects her is that sometimes when her husband Romain Bonnet, 29, touches her she flinches.

Mary shared with the outlet, “I’m not certain if things will alter, but I believe I’ve been handling the situation quite effectively by telling my story.”

She mentioned that the most challenging aspect was suppressing much of it for survival purposes, thus she needed to revisit, experience it again, discuss it, and recall her emotions at the time

In my role as a lifestyle guide, I’ve been closely following the journey of Mary and Romain from Selling Sunset. They’ve been on an emotional rollercoaster, striving to start their family, and have faced heartbreak with a miscarriage and multiple rounds of IVF treatment. It’s a poignant reminder that parenthood is a challenging yet beautiful journey for many couples

In regards to the core idea she wants readers to take away from her book, she expressed that she aspires for them to understand the importance of ‘continuing onward’ or ‘pressing forward’ in their own lives

She reassured him, saying, “No matter what challenges you’re facing right now, you’ll overcome them, much like you’ve handled everything else in your life so far. Keep having faith in yourself, because I never thought I’d reach where I am today either.”

Keep a cheerful outlook. When you stumble, dust yourself off and find joy again. Cherish every goodness you encounter, for it will surely appear
