Scarlett Johansson’s Raunchy R-Rated Comedy ‘Rough Night’ Becomes Overnight Smash on Streaming

Scarlett Johansson is enjoying continued success following last year’s hit, Jurassic World Rebirth, and is currently filming a new version of The Exorcist directed by Mike Flanagan. But before those roles, she appeared in a little-known, outrageous comedy that’s unexpectedly become very popular on streaming services.

Okay, so I just saw this movie starring Scarlett Johansson as Jess, a woman about to get married and a rising political star. The setup is simple: she has a wild bachelorette weekend in Miami with her college friends, and things get very out of hand. We’re talking a night of partying, a bit too much alcohol and… well, let’s just say a male stripper is involved. But the fun doesn’t last. When the stripper suddenly dies, the girls are thrown into a panic, desperately trying to cover it up before it destroys Jess’s career and her future. It’s a frantic, often hilarious, and surprisingly tense ride.

The movie Rough Night, released on June 16, 2017, wasn’t a success in theaters. Despite costing $26 million to make, it only opened in seventh place and ultimately earned $47 million. However, the comedy has recently found a new audience on streaming services. Nearly ten years after its release, it’s currently the most popular movie on HBO Max worldwide, according to Flix Patrol.

‘Rough Night’ Is a Carbon Copy of Much Better Movies

Starring Kate McKinnon, Ilana Glazer, Jillian Bell, and Zoë Kravitz, Rough Night offered a fresh take on the typical wild-night-out comedy – usually centered around men, like in The Hangover – by focusing on a group of women, similar to Bridesmaids. Despite having all the elements needed for success, the film ultimately didn’t work because it struggled to define its own genre and tone.

The movie starts with over-the-top scenes, then quickly shifts into a complicated story about friendships. Unfortunately, the humor feels drawn out, and the characters are predictable and lack depth. Despite being about lifelong friends, their bond doesn’t feel genuine, and they come across as just acquaintances rather than a close-knit group.

‘Rough Night’ Was Panned by Critics and Audiences Alike

Despite being popular on HBO Max internationally, the 2017 comedy Rough Night wasn’t well-received when it first came out. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a low score of 45%, and many dismissed it as a poor imitation of Bridesmaids. Others criticized it for being offensive, and one review said it tried—and failed—to combine raunchy bachelor party humor with a feminist message.

Viewers strongly disliked the film, giving it a low score of 29% on Rotten Tomatoes. Johansson hasn’t appeared in a similar movie since, and likely won’t in the future.

If you’re interested in checking out the movie everyone’s talking about, Rough Night is now available to stream on HBO Max worldwide. In the United States, you can also rent or buy it online.
