Sarah Jessica Parker’s husband Matthew Broderick talks ’embarrassing’ SATC role he rejected
As a dedicated fan who has followed Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick’s journey since their days on Broadway, I cannot help but feel a twinge of regret at Matthew’s decision to pass on the ‘premature ejaculator’ role in Sex and The City. Though I understand his reservations about the part, it would have been hilarious to see him navigate Carrie Bradshaw’s love life!
Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker’s spouse, has shared details on the “awkward” part in Sex and the City that he declined to play.
In 1997, after spending a significant amount of time together in the entertainment industry, this long-standing showbiz duo tied the knot – exactly one year prior to Sarah’s career-defining turn as Carrie Bradshaw on the cherished HBO series.
Across six seasons, Sex and the City featured an impressive array of guest appearances, including actors like Matthew McConaughey and Vince Vaughn from Hollywood films, musicians such as Jon Bon Jovi and Alanis Morissette, and the legendary ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov.
Yet, despite Matthew leading the cast in films such as Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Lion King, he didn’t ultimately join their group (of award-winning actors).
In a heartfelt chat on James Corden’s This Life Of Mine on Sirius XM, I finally got to understand why my idol turned down the chance to grace our favorite show as a guest star.
Matthew disclosed that he was given an awkward assignment, playing a character who prematurely ejaculates in the show, which he ultimately declined to do.
He mentioned that whenever there was an opportunity for him to contribute or perform a task, unfortunately, he was unable to do so, which essentially summarizes the situation. This might have been due to scheduling issues.
He mentioned that there were times when it felt like asking, “Would you like to spend two days portraying a person with premature ejaculation?” To which he would respond, “I’m not sure I’m comfortable with that…” It’s just a bit awkward for him. His interviewer couldn’t help but laugh at the situation.
The ‘premature ejaculator’ was short story writer Vaughn Wysel, who was ultimately played by Justin Theroux on the 1999 episode Shortcomings.
Vaughn and Carrie have a short-lived romance, as Carrie harbors doubts due to Vaughn’s personal issues, specifically concerning intimacy. However, ending things proves challenging for her because of the deep affection she holds towards Vaughn’s family, especially his captivating mother, portrayed by Valerie Harper.
Matthew openly shared his affection for Sex and the City, yet subtly indicated that he felt it was better left as something his wife enjoyed independently.
He expressed that he regrets not experiencing or being a part of something, as it was significant to her. It might have hindered his growth, though he’s unsure about it.
Matthew explained, “The arrangement simply didn’t come together. I was a big fan of that series, and I would have been thrilled to participate, but unfortunately, things never seemed to fit properly.
Despite the fact that Matthew didn’t appear on Sex and the City, it’s been more than once that Matthew and Sarah have shared the stage together since their relationship started back in 1992.
1996 saw them sharing the stage in a reprisal of the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” penned by Frank Loesser and Abe Burrows.
Previously, he acted alongside Megan Mullally in the cast, but she gained recognition from Will & Grace later on. When Megan departed the project, they replaced her with Sarah.
In 2022, Matthew and Sarah led a revival of Neil Simon’s comedy “Plaza Suite” on Broadway, and they later brought it to the West End of London this year.
In 1992, the two of them began their romantic relationship, a full six years prior to the debut of “Sex and the City.” They have three kids together: James, who is currently 21, as well as twins Tabitha and Marion, both age 14.
In the past, Sarah admitted that she and Matthew had faced both highs and lows throughout their enduring partnership.
For the past two decades, there are times when things go well, times that are just okay, and times when things aren’t great. This is what a marriage looks like,” she explained to The Telegraph in 2011.
‘That’s a relationship. That’s a friendship, even — relationships outside the marriage run the same course. If you’re in it for the long haul and you want meaningful relationships, you are going to go through lots of different periods.’
