The new Ryan Gosling sci-fi movie is a huge hit. It’s been praised by critics, is performing very well at the box office, and is on track to become one of the highest-earning science fiction films of all time.
Everyone’s been raving about the movie Project Hail Mary, and for good reason. It’s not only beautifully made with great performances, but it’s also a feel-good and genuinely fun watch – and it’s an original story, not part of an existing series. According to Variety, the film has already earned over $500 million worldwide in less than a month since hitting theaters.
Amazon MGM Studios has earned $256.6 million in North America and $510 million worldwide in less than a month since opening in theaters on March 19th. Notably, the film only saw a 21% drop in ticket sales during its fourth weekend.
Project Hail Mary Is Close to Becoming 1 of the Highest-Grossing Sci-Fi Films
Topping the list of all-time highest-grossing sci-fi movies is 2009’s Avatar, which is actually the highest-grossing film of all time. While the list features huge franchises like Star Wars, Transformers, and Jurassic Park, there aren’t many completely original movies included.
The movie Project Hail Mary is based on Andy Weir’s 2021 novel of the same name and is a completely original story – it isn’t connected to any existing franchise with sequels, prequels, or spinoffs, which is unusual these days. In just under a month, Project Hail Mary is on track to become one of the top ten highest-grossing films that isn’t based on a pre-existing franchise.
Topping the list of highest-grossing films is the Chinese comedy Hi, Mom (2021), which earned $839 million. However, when looking at Hollywood films specifically, Christopher Nolan’s Inception comes out on top with $836.8 million worldwide. Other popular films on the list include Gravity ($723.1 million), a film that grossed $630.1 million, plus Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One and War of the Worlds. Will Smith’s I Am Legend, Michael Bay’s Armageddon, Rolan Emmerich’s The Day After Tomorrow, and WALL-E also made the list.
With just under $12 million more in earnings, Project Hail Mary will surpass WALL-E on the list of top-grossing sci-fi films. This progress also means the movie is getting closer to becoming profitable.
Ryan Gosling’s new sci-fi movie cost a lot to make – around $200 million – and was heavily promoted. It needs to earn about $600 million worldwide to cover its expenses, and it’s steadily moving closer to that goal. Even if it doesn’t reach $600 million in theaters, it’s expected to make enough money through digital sales and streaming to become profitable.
Project Hail Mary Was an Astounding Success
Andy Weir, the author of the novel behind the 2015 sci-fi film The Martian, had a lot of anticipation surrounding his new space novel. Fortunately, both the book and its adaptation lived up to expectations.
The movie Project Hail Mary has been a huge success, earning very high praise from both critics and general audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics gave it a 94% approval rating based on 384 reviews, and it’s officially “Certified Fresh.” Audiences loved it too, giving it a 96% “Verified Hot” rating.
