A moving drama featuring Ruth Wilson and Tom Burke will soon be leaving a streaming service. Directed by Harry Wootliff, known for Only You, True Things tells the story of a woman working in a benefits office whose life is unexpectedly revitalized when she meets a mysterious stranger.
I was so excited to finally see True Things when it came out in 2021! It’s based on the book True Things About Me by Deborah Kay Davies, which I’d heard great things about. Apparently, Harry Wootliff worked on the screenplay with Molly Davies, and Jude Law was one of the producers, which is awesome.
The movie takes place in Ramsgate and features actress Wilson as Kate Perkins, a woman in her thirties who works at the local social services office.

Kate briefly considered a relationship with a man named Blond (Burke), but began to seriously rethink her life when he showed up after work one day. They started dating, and Kate hoped Blond could offer her the fresh start she was longing for.
You can currently watch the film on BBC iPlayer for the next 20 days. That gives you until May 12th to see True Things before it’s removed – it’s been available on the service for almost a year now.

The film True Things debuted at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2021 and received generally favorable reviews. It’s currently rated ‘Fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 79% approval rating based on 68 critic reviews.
The new film is being celebrated as a strong second feature from director Harry Wootliff, following his earlier work, Only You. Actress Wilson is receiving acclaim for her captivating performance, according to Deadline.
Reviewers at RogerEbert.com highlighted the film’s exploration of loneliness and sexual desire, and strongly recommended seeing it.
If you’re looking for a movie made for adults that honestly and respectfully explores mature themes like sex and loneliness, the review suggests you shouldn’t miss True Things.
According to iNews.co.uk, the film, while familiar, ultimately focuses more on unhealthy relationships than the initially suggested theme of exploring unconventional attraction. However, the reviewer did commend the strong chemistry between Burke and Wilson.
True Things is streaming on BBC iPlayer.
