Key Highlights
- Ripple locked 700 million XRP back into escrow after unlocking 1 billion XRP on May 1.
- The relocked amount is valued at nearly $974 million based on current market prices.
- The escrow mechanism is designed to manage XRP supply and limit sudden market pressure.
Ripple regularly manages the amount of XRP in circulation. As part of this process, they recently locked 700 million XRP into an escrow account after releasing 1 billion XRP on May 1, 2026. This activity is confirmed by data on the XRP ledger and demonstrates Ripple’s ongoing commitment to controlling the supply of XRP.
WhaleAlert reports that 700 million XRP tokens, currently worth about $974 million, have been relocked. The price of each XRP coin is between $1.38 and $1.39. These transfers are visible as multiple transactions on the XRP Ledger.
As a researcher following XRP, I’ve observed another relock occurring shortly after the release of 1 billion XRP earlier today. This system of escrow releases and relocks seems designed to manage the supply of XRP and give confidence to those invested in the token. Essentially, Ripple locks up the majority of the released tokens for an extended period – years, in fact – which prevents a sudden surge in selling and keeps funds available for future strategic initiatives.
Absorption by market forces
Most of the XRP released each month is being bought up by the market, particularly as Ripple focuses on expanding its use for international payments and stablecoins.
As I’ve been tracking XRP, it’s navigating a somewhat unpredictable market. Despite price fluctuations, it’s actually held its own reasonably well. We’ve seen these price movements often coincide with new partnerships and integrations, which is encouraging. However, it’s important to note that the token still has a significant way to go to reach its previous peak value.
While the immediate effect on the number of tokens in circulation is small, the use of a planned approach suggests a focus on long-term supply management rather than simply flooding the market with tokens. However, when these unlocked tokens are sold, they could temporarily push the price down.
Expansion in MEA region
Ripple has opened a new regional office for the Middle East and Africa (MEA) in Dubai’s International Financial Centre (DIFC). The company announced on April 30th that this expansion will allow them to double their team size in the region to meet growing demand for their products and services.
Following 14 months of progress and key regulatory wins for Ripple in the Middle East and Africa (MEA), the region now represents a significant portion of Ripple’s global clientele for cross-border payments and instant access to funds.
Ripple refers to the initiative as essential
Ripple explains that its escrow system is key to XRP functioning as a quick and efficient way to move money around the world, especially with its on-demand liquidity services. As regulations become clearer and more countries embrace faster international payments, the release of XRP tokens will likely match the actual demand for them.
Ripple continues to heavily rely on its escrow system, and people in the crypto market are paying close attention to things like new partnerships, regulatory decisions, and improvements to the Ripple network.
