I’m so excited for season 4 of Reacher to start! And even better, we already know season 5 will be based on Lee Child’s Make Me. It’s the twentieth book in the Jack Reacher series and honestly, it feels like a really smart pick for the show. Digging into the story, I think Make Me could finally give us some new characters we’ll love as much as Roscoe and Neagley – characters who can really fill those roles.
Similar to the Jack Reacher novels, the Prime Video series Reacher also features short-lived romances for its main character. Throughout the show, Alan Ritchson’s Jack Reacher has had a brief connection with a new love interest each season before moving on and starting over in a different town. The only consistent relationship across all three seasons has been with Frances Neagley, played by Maria Sten.
I’m a little worried about Neagley potentially leaving Reacher since she’s getting her own show now – I guess that means she might not be in every season anymore. It’s hard to imagine anyone really filling her shoes, or even Roscoe’s, in season 4. But I’m actually feeling optimistic about season 5 – I think they’ve got a character lined up who could totally take over for both of them and be amazing!
By Adapting Lee Child’s Make Me, Reacher Season 5 Fills Roscoe & Neagley’s Boots With 1 Character
In Lee Child’s Make Me, Jack Reacher finds himself in the small town of Mother’s Rest, intrigued by the story behind its unusual name. His curiosity quickly leads him to Michelle Chang, a woman searching for a missing friend, and together they uncover a large and dangerous conspiracy.
Michelle Chang almost comes off as the perfect combination of both Roscoe and Neagley.
Similar to characters like Roscoe and Neagley, Chang initially works with Jack Reacher as an investigator and their relationship eventually becomes romantic. Like Neagley, she has experience in law enforcement – she used to be an FBI agent – and now works as a private investigator. Unlike some past partners, such as Dixon and Duffy, Chang is a fully engaged participant in the main investigation.
I was really impressed with this character – like Roscoe and Neagley before her, she’s a seriously capable partner for Reacher. What I especially loved was the connection they had; it felt real, with both of them genuinely respecting each other’s minds and sharing some definite chemistry.
From the beginning, Jack Reacher’s romantic relationships in the show have often felt weak and didn’t really add much to the story. But now, with this new season based on Make Me, the series is hinting at a strong female character who combines the emotional connection we saw with Roscoe and the skill of Neagley.
Roscoe and Neagley are already beloved supporting characters in the Reacher series, but Michelle Chang, appearing in season five, has the potential to be the strongest and most developed female character yet seen in the show.
Reacher Season 5’s Small Town Setting Is Another Big Strength
So far, the first and third seasons of Reacher have been stronger than the second. Many fans believe the first season was the show’s best, largely because it told a classic Jack Reacher story in a small-town environment.
The show did a great job of introducing Reacher as an enigmatic outsider who seemed out of place in the small town, effectively emphasizing his powerful presence. The limited setting and few characters also created a quick and close connection between Roscoe and Reacher, as they quickly came to depend on each other.
Lee Child’s Make Me shares a similar approach, using a simple setting and slowly developing the connection between Reacher and Chang. By the end of the novel, their relationship feels comparable to his one with Roscoe – they enjoy being together in the moment without needing to plan for the future.
Hopefully, Reacher season 5 will leverage its source material’s strengths.
