Prime Video has a thrilling spy series that successfully blends the gritty realism of Slow Horses with the classic excitement of James Bond. The show, which recently returned for a second season, combines the best elements of both, delivering a balanced mix of action and outstanding acting.
Both Slow Horses and The Night Manager offer a realistic look at the world of espionage, a departure from typical, over-the-top spy stories. Slow Horses is famous for its dark and cynical portrayal of intelligence work, while The Night Manager shares its focus on flawed characters haunted by their pasts. Although the shows seem different on the surface – one follows disgraced agents, the other a hotel manager drawn into espionage – they both present spies who are far from perfect heroes.
Jonathan Pine, the main character in The Night Manager, shares many traits with James Bond. He’s charming, capable of danger, and possesses a subtly intimidating presence. Like the James Bond films, The Night Manager is set in various international locations. The show’s villain also feels like a classic Bond adversary – wealthy, refined, and influential, which enhances the story’s suspense.
The Night Manager Is One Of Tom Hiddleston’s Best Roles
Though Tom Hiddleston is widely known for playing Loki, his performance in The Night Manager demonstrates his range as an actor. This spy thriller features Hiddleston as Jonathan Pine, an ex-soldier working as a hotel manager who is drawn into a mission by British intelligence to stop a ruthless arms dealer, Richard Roper (played by Hugh Laurie).
Tom Hiddleston is a remarkably versatile actor, but his performance as Pine truly highlights his skill. The role requires him to play a variety of characters as part of a larger plan, giving audiences a chance to see the full breadth of his talent. He effortlessly transitions between playing a sophisticated hotel manager and a dangerous, deceptive man.
Tom Hiddleston is fantastic as Loki, but his portrayal of Pine feels different – a standout performance compared to his other work. While Loki is playful and charismatic, Pine is more reserved and shows a lot of vulnerability, making the character feel incredibly real and relatable.
The Night Manager Has Been Renewed For Season 3
After receiving excellent reviews when it first aired on BBC One in 2016, many expected The Night Manager to quickly return for another season. However, updates were slow to come. Finally, in April 2024, Prime Video announced that the series would continue with two new seasons.
Fans were happy to see a second season of The Night Manager, especially since it was Tom Hiddleston’s first TV role outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the new season didn’t receive quite as much praise as the first. Even so, it still proved popular, landing in the top 10 most-watched shows on Prime Video.
| The Night Manager Rotten Tomatoes Score | ||
|---|---|---|
| Season | Critics Score | Audience Score |
| 1 | 91% | 89% |
| 2 | 88% | 61% |
There’s currently no official release date for season 3 of The Night Manager, but fans might not have to wait as long as they did for season 2. David Farr, the show’s writer, recently told Radio Times that the gap between seasons 2 and 3 won’t be as long this time.
It’s unclear what the story will be for season 3 of The Night Manager. The first season adapted the entire John le Carré novel it was based on. However, the season 2 finale provided a lot of potential storylines for the show to explore in the future.
