The final episode of The Boys marks the end of a significant chapter for Prime Video. However, the streaming service continues to deliver popular content, as demonstrated by the success of Reacher and the highly anticipated release of Jack Ryan: Ghost War. Both shows are major action thrillers that attract large audiences worldwide.
While both shows were popular, The Boys is really Amazon’s biggest hit. This darkly comedic and often shocking series, based on the comic book by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, launched in 2019 and quickly became a critical darling and one of Prime Video’s most well-known programs.
The Series Finale Of The Boys Signals The End of An Era
With the final episode of The Boys airing on May 20th, Prime Video is closing a chapter after seven years. The show, which has been Amazon’s biggest hit since 2019, is ending, and now other series will compete to become the streaming service’s next major franchise.
Even though some fans have had reservations, The Boys has consistently received excellent reviews over its five seasons. The first season earned an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is the show’s lowest score by a significant margin – every season since has scored 90% or higher. In addition to the main series, The Boys universe has expanded with three spin-off shows: The Boys Presents: Diabolical, Gen V, and Vought: Rising.
It’s hard to imagine any of Prime Video’s shows topping these successes, but a few stand a chance. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is Prime’s biggest investment, and this ambitious fantasy series doesn’t hold back.
Various Candidates Could Replace The Boys As Prime’s Biggest Series
While The Rings of Power received mixed reviews, it hasn’t quite lived up to the impact of The Boys. Invincible, with its mature themes and potential for spin-offs, is another strong possibility. The critically praised Fallout is also a contender, but it’s still too early to say if it will have the same lasting power as The Boys.
| The Boys & Gen V Seasons | Critics’ Score | Audience Score |
|---|---|---|
| The Boys season 5 | 100% | TBD |
| The Boys season 3 | 98% | 72% |
| The Boys season 2 | 97% | 83% |
| Gen V season 1 | 97% | 77% |
| The Boys season 4 | 92% | 54% |
| Gen V season 2 | 91% | 70% |
| The Boys season 1 | 85% | 90% |
Although the animated series Invincible hasn’t reached as large an audience as The Boys, Reacher is quickly becoming a major hit for Prime Video, with a spinoff on the way and consistently positive reviews. While critics love Reacher, it’s unlikely to have the same widespread cultural influence as The Boys, which has launched the careers of many popular actors.
