‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Animators Urge Fans Not to Watch Leaked Movie on Social Media

Earlier this year, Paramount Pictures surprised fans by announcing that the latest Avatar movie, Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, will premiere on Paramount+ in October instead of in cinemas. The film follows an adult Aang as he discovers an ancient power that could protect his people from disappearing. He and his friends embark on a worldwide journey to find it, racing against time to keep it out of the wrong hands and preserve the peace they’ve worked so hard to achieve. However, the shift to streaming isn’t the only challenge the movie has faced.

On April 12th, someone anonymously posted two short clips from the movie Legend of Aang online after receiving a full copy. These clips quickly spread across the internet, including on the website 4Chan, where people encouraged the original poster to share the entire film. The next day, a different account, seemingly based in Singapore, leaked the full movie, leading to even wider distribution. Paramount investigated the leak but found no evidence of a security breach within their own systems.

After leaked footage of the Legend of Aang movie surfaced online, the animators who worked on it shared their disappointment (according to The Hollywood Reporter). Animator Julia Schoel expressed on X (formerly Twitter) that the leak was “incredibly disrespectful” to the artists’ dedication. She also criticized Paramount’s decision to release the film directly to streaming, explaining that the team had spent years working on the movie with the understanding it would premiere in theaters, allowing them to celebrate their efforts.

Tessa Bright, the animation director for the film, also expressed her understanding of the frustration felt by those who worked on the project. She noted the incredible effort and dedication that went into making the film, and believes many people will recognize that quality in the finished product.

It’s no surprise the team behind the movie is upset; no one expected their work to be released to the public for free like this. While leaks happen, this is a significant one, especially because the leaked version was nearly complete. Paramount has been working to remove the movie from the internet since the leak, but the initial damage is already done.

Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender is set to debut on Paramount+ on Oct. 9, 2026.
