As a huge Pokémon fan, I can honestly say Pokémon Red and Blue are legendary! They’re the games that started it all – not just for me, but for pretty much everyone who loves Pokémon today. These were the first versions released here in America, and they launched this massive franchise we all know and love. Seriously, every Pokémon game since has built on what Red and Blue did, and you can see their influence in tons of other role-playing games too.
Thirty years after their initial release, Pokémon Red and Blue have been completely updated with 3D graphics. While these games saw remakes with Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen in the early 2000s, and spiritual successors in Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!, this is the first time the original games have been fully reimagined in 3D.
Pokémon Red and Blue 3D Remakes Are Available to Play For Free Today
Since Pokémon Scarlet and Violet came out, many fans have hoped GameFreak would remake the original Kanto region as a fully open-world game. However, despite Nintendo’s interest, GameFreak hasn’t announced any plans to revisit Red and Blue.
Fortunately, fans—especially those who create modifications for games—are helping to improve things with a new and exciting project. This mod transforms Pokémon Red and Blue into a game with 3D, pixel-art graphics.
This impressive mod runs smoothly at 60 frames per second and supports widescreen displays. It also includes features like realistic lighting effects with ambient occlusion and dynamic shadows, plus offers multiple camera views for exciting action. The game world is completely three-dimensional, while battles are presented in a visually engaging 2.5D style.
The “Dramatic Shape Voxel Mod” lets players choose to have a curved world like in Animal Crossing, and they can switch between full color and the original Game Boy’s green-tinted monochrome display.
The “Dramatic Shape Voxel Mod” is a part of the Pokémon Gen 1 Recompilation Project. It transforms the game world into a 3D diorama with actual geometric terrain, realistic shadows, and characters represented as 3D sprites. Instead of traditional sprite layering, it uses depth to create occlusion, giving the game a miniature model aesthetic that can be further enhanced with an optional tilt-shift effect.
The game depicts battles taking place on actual landscapes instead of generic arenas. When combat begins, non-player characters disappear from the map, and the environment shows signs of destruction as the fight unfolds. Battles occur on the closest available open ground, presented with an over-the-shoulder camera angle. The player character is positioned low and to the left, while opponents appear higher and to the right, creating a sense of depth through subtle background movement and focused clarity on both combatants.
The 3D remake of Pokémon Red and Blue, ‘Dramatic Shape Voxel Mod” is available to play now.
