Now streaming on Prime Video in the UK, The Long Walk is a gripping thriller adapted from a Stephen King novel. The story takes place in a bleak 1970s where fifty boys compete in a televised walking contest each year, pushing their limits in a fight for survival. It stars Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson.
Contestants have to walk continuously at a speed of three miles per hour for multiple days. If they fall below that pace, they receive a warning. Three warnings result in immediate elimination, and the final contestant remaining wins a large cash prize and has one wish fulfilled.
This movie is based on a horror story by Stephen King, originally published in 1979. Francis Lawrence directed it, and JT Mollner wrote the screenplay.

The movie features Hoffman and Jonsson, along with a talented cast including Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Joshua Odjick, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Roman Griffin Davis, Josh Hamilton, Judy Greer, and the legendary Mark Hamill of Star Wars fame.
I remember when this movie came out – everyone loved it! It was actually named one of the best films of 2025 by Digital Spy, which was pretty cool.

Rotten Tomatoes gives The Long Walk an 88% rating, and critics agree that the film’s heartfelt performances from Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson elevate Stephen King’s story. While the characters face a desperate struggle for survival, audiences will find the movie captivating.
I was really struck by the honesty in The Long Walk. The Reveal put it perfectly – it’s a raw, human horror story, and director Lawrence, with a script by JT Mollner, doesn’t shy away from being brutally bleak. It’s uncompromising, and that’s what makes it so powerful.
I just read a review in Variety about The Long Walk, and it sounds pretty interesting! They said it doesn’t quite hit the super-emotional peaks it’s going for, but it’s still a really gripping and unexpected dystopian movie. Apparently, it’s full of personal stories and really gets into the culture and values of the country it’s set in.
ComingSoon.net praised the film as ‘perfect,’ and Slate noted that it’s one of the most streamlined and impactful adaptations of Stephen King’s work in years.
According to IndieWire, The Long Walk doesn’t offer any fresh insights if you’re already frustrated with American leadership. However, the film is notable for its unwavering dedication to its dark and serious tone, which is uncommon for a major studio release.
Bloody Disgusting praised the film, noting that while it doesn’t shy away from its dark and brutal elements, it’s the strong sense of friendship and a fantastic cast that make it one of the best adaptations of Stephen King’s work to date.
The Long Walk is available to stream on Prime Video in the UK.
