Olympics commentator apologises after sexist remark about swimming team
I was absolutely disappointed and dismayed to hear about Bob Ballard’s insensitive comment during the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay event at the Olympics. As a long-time fan of sports and an advocate for gender equality, his words were not only inappropriate but also belittling to the incredible athletes who had just won the race.
Olympics commentator Bob Ballard issued an apology following his termination for making a disparaging remark about women during live commentary.
Bob Ballard, a member of Eurosport’s team for the 2024 Olympics coverage, made a controversial comment during the broadcast of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay event on Saturday. His remark sparked widespread reaction online and ultimately resulted in his removal from further Olympic coverage.
He commented, “The women are wrapping up now. Women can be quite social, taking their time with makeup and such.” His co-commentator, Lizzie Simmonds, found this statement inappropriate back then.
After being let go from Eurosport’s coverage of Paris 2024, Ballard expressed on social media that his remarks during the Australian freestyle relay victory celebration on the previous Saturday had upset some people.
I didn’t mean to offend or make light of anyone’s feelings, and for any unintended harm caused, I offer my sincere apologies. I strongly support women’s sports.
I’ll deeply mourn the absence of Eurosport’s team during the remaining Olympics. Wishing them great success. No more comments from my end. Appreciate your understanding.
In his next post on social media, Ballard asked people to avoid attacking Simmonds, explaining that she was not involved in the situation.
Last night during Eurosport’s broadcast, commentator Bob Ballard made a remark that was out of line. A Eurosport representative spoke about this issue.
“To that end, he has been removed from our commentary roster with immediate effect.”
The Australian women’s team, known for their success in the 4x100m freestyle relay, emerged victorious with swimmers Mollie O’Callaghan, Shayna Jack, Emma McKeon, and Meg Harris making up the roster.
At the Olympics, BBC One and Two, in addition to Eurosport 1 and 2, broadcast some coverage. For comprehensive access, consider Discovery+ where an Olympics package is available for a monthly fee of £3.99 until 2024.
