Nicole Kidman’s month of heartbreak after her mother passed away weeks before her viral confrontation with Salma Hayek at Balenciaga show
As a seasoned fashion commentator with over two decades in the industry, I must say that the complex dynamics within the Kering conglomerate, particularly the relationship between Nicole, Salma Hayek Pinault, and their respective roles, have piqued my interest.
The heated exchange between Nicole Kidman and Salma Hayek during Paris Fashion Week recently made headlines, happening mere weeks following the death of Nicole’s mother.
At the conclusion of last month’s Balenciaga show, it seemed like a heated argument on the red carpet involving two prominent actors occurred, culminating in the departure of the 57-year-old Australian actress.
In front of the photographers, they (Katy Perry and others) found themselves in an intense argument, seemingly triggered by Salma, aged 58, allegedly touching Nicole during a request for them to pose together.
On Sunday, videos related to an event that occurred two weeks back started circulating online, causing a stir on social media about who may have been at fault in the situation.
For Nicole, the occasion represented a crucial and somewhat tense phase, being her inaugural public outing following the passing of her mother, Janelle.
At the beginning of last month, the actress who won an Oscar announced that her mother had passed away only a few hours prior to receiving the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival.
Initially, she arrived in Venice for the movie “Babygirl,” but due to tragic family news back home in Sydney, she had to cut her stay short and rush back.
Instead of her director Halina Reijn reading a prepared statement, it was revealed that the actor spoke the words herself, as they shared the sad news that Nicole’s mother, Janelle, had passed away at the age of 83, while she (Nicole) was in Venice.
Today, I reached Venice only to learn moments later that my lovely, valiant mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, had sadly passed away.
As a devoted admirer, I find myself overwhelmed and compelled to be with my loved ones, yet, the essence of this recognition belongs to her. She has sculpted me, navigated my path, and breathed life into who I am.
I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity to mention her name to everyone here, through Halina. The union of life and art is heartrendingly sad, and I share that pain with you all. We care deeply for each one of you.
During a conversation on Fresh Air podcast in January 2022, Nicole mentioned her mother’s ongoing health challenges.
She said they’d managed to visit the Art Gallery of New South Wales after-hours, where they took in the Matisse: Life & Spirit exhibition, describing it as ‘soothing balm’.
She mentioned that our main reason for being here is to look after her, my mother, and to be sure she’s surrounded by her loving grandchildren, she added.
Fortunately, despite Omicron causing widespread concern in this country yesterday, we managed to take her to the gallery after hours and introduce her to the Matisse exhibition. For someone like me, who was nurtured in the arts by my mother, viewing Matisse was a calming respite. Last night, Matisse served as a soothing balm for me.
Later in the conversation, Nicole expressed gratitude for being able to view the world from her mother’s perspective, referring to it as incredibly advantageous.
She shared that her mother was providing her with a unique perspective on the world, as if she were seeing it through the eyes of an 81-year-old woman.
At this moment, it’s incredibly advantageous due to her high level of awareness. She possesses all cognitive abilities intact, meaning no information or memories have been lost. This fact is truly intriguing, and her intelligence shines exceptionally brightly.
She is granting me access due to her openness and honesty, which means I’m seeing the world through her perspective, specifically her viewpoint as my mother. Consequently, in a way, I am connected to a piece of myself that’s around eighty years old.
She commented: ‘Clearly, it’s her unique viewpoint. Every 80-year-old has their own perspective, yet it’s hers, and her distinct journey that I’m absorbing and gaining insights from.’
Audience members found themselves divided on the seemingly uncomfortable encounter between Nicole and Salma, as one commenter expressed online: “Why does Nicole come off as so impolite?
But another on Reddit said: ‘I get that Salma was probably trying to direct her to pose for the cameras, but some people don’t like to be touched regardless of the situation, and you just gotta respect that’.
One witness claimed that Nicole told Salma firmly: ‘Don’t touch me’, while the onlooker also claimed that Katy had appeared ’embarrassed’.
An online watcher said: ‘Oh god, you could cut the tension with a knife.’
Following a quick withdrawal of her hand, Nicole spun around and subsequently pivoted once more to confront Salma. In this position, she made several expressive movements with her hands, among which seemed to be a halt gesture. Additionally, she pointed a finger in Salma’s direction.
Next, Nicole gave Katy a farewell peck and departed, seeming to exchange a few more animated conversations with Salma.
2003’s Best Actress Oscar winner, Nicole Kidman, seemed to have a lively conversation with Salma Hayek, her competitor, off-camera. (As an obsessed fan, I can’t help but feel like I was a fly on the wall during their exchange!)
At that moment, Salma appeared to be asking for advice, to which Kidman allegedly responded, “You don’t need it.” However, Salma asserted, “I actually do.
On October 1st, Salma shared a series of photos on Instagram, one featuring her alongside Nicole, displaying slightly uneasy body language from both parties.
The tense interaction has another twist in the tale thanks to Salma’s personal links to Balenciaga.
Some observers noted that her husband, François-Henri Pinault, who she wed in 2009 and is a billionaire, owns the high-end fashion label Balenciaga. Meanwhile, Nicole works as a representative for the brand.
The current CEO of Kering, a company founded by French entrepreneur Pinault’s father, is Pinault himself. His father was initially known for his success in the timber trade and later acquired a significant 42% share in the Gucci Group back in 1999.
Today, the high-end fashion brand conglomerate currently manages Gucci, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, and Alexander McQueen. Back in 2005, Pinault, who was only 40 at that time, assumed the position of CEO from his father within Kering.
Nicole meanwhile was named brand ambassador for Balenciaga in December 2023.
Louis Pisano, both a writer and fashion critic, tweeted: “It seems the Balenciaga contract could be in jeopardy due to the frosty exchange between Nicole and Salma at a brand event run by her spouse.
I, too, noticed that Salma seemed to be acting in her capacity as the boss’ spouse while offering guidance to Nicole regarding the photos. One individual even shared on Twitter:
In this scenario, it can be expressed as follows: ‘Since Nicole works for Salma’s spouse, it means that Salma has the authority over her. To clarify, Nicole is employed by Salma’s husband.’
In a moment of excitement during her appointment, Nicole, who shares the role as ambassador with stars like Kim Kardashian and Isabelle Hubbert, expressed: “Balenciaga has been part of some of the most significant moments in my life, from my wedding to walking the Oscars red carpet. I’m eager to make more cherished memories with them.
In 2022, a controversial social media uproar ensued over an image series by a Spanish brand, featuring kids clutching teddy bears adorned in bondage-style outfits as part of their Christmas advertising campaign.
In the two years following the scandal, Nicole’s ongoing association with the brand has invited criticism, while Salma faced backlash for staying quiet about it. (Alternatively, “Nicole’s persistent engagement with the brand since the scandal has been met with criticism, and Salma’s silence on the matter has also drawn criticism.”)
Balenciaga expressed regret and offered an apology if their holiday campaign unintentionally caused any distress or offense.
It was a mistake to include our plush bear bags in a campaign aimed at children. Consequently, we’ve promptly taken down the campaign from all platforms.
‘We strongly condemn abuse of children in any form. We stand for children safety and well-being.’
