just got the Saturday Morning Cartoon treatment courtesy of a fan-favorite animator.
On January 31st, fans of Berserk were surprised with a unique and emotional short video called “Saturday Morning Berserk” on the Solid jj YouTube channel. The video playfully reimagines Berserk and its characters – like Guts and the rest of the main cast – as a darker, more intense version of the Scooby-Doo gang.
Fan-Favorite Comedy Creator Transforms the Berserk Anime Into Scooby-Doo Stand-Ins
This video is a fun mashup! It puts the characters Guts, Casca, Pippin, Judeau, and Corkus from Berserk into a Scooby-Doostyle adventure as they search for Griffith. Think of it as a Saturday morning cartoon – a lighthearted take on the usually dark series. The video creators explain that the concept is about combining the worlds of Berserk and Scooby-Doo*, and featuring Guts, Casca, and Pippin (who plays the role of the dog!).
For six years, the Solid jj YouTube channel has been entertaining audiences with playfully edgy animated parodies of beloved cartoon and video game figures, building a subscriber base of over 1.5 million. The channel has become increasingly popular recently, especially due to its series of humorous, frame-by-frame spoofs of well-known games and characters.
The story of Berserk began in 1989 with a manga created by Kentaro Miura. Since then, it has grown to 43 volumes and continues to be popular with both critics and fans.
The story unfolds in a dark fantasy world, following Guts, a lone warrior haunted by a terrible past. He reluctantly joins the Band of the Hawk, a group of mercenaries, and unexpectedly finds friendship and love with Casca, another warrior. However, their newfound peace is shattered by a horrific, supernatural event called the Eclipse.
Since its release, Berserk has become incredibly popular, extending beyond manga and anime to become a significant part of broader pop culture. It has been adapted into anime several times, most recently with the 2016 series produced by studios GEMBA, Millepensee, and Liden Films.
I’m so excited to continue working on Berserk! After Kentaro Miura’s passing in 2021, I stepped in to help oversee the series. I’ve been juggling my own work and making sure Berserk keeps going strong. Just to be clear, I’m not taking over drawing Guts for the main story – that’s still Yoshimitsu Kurosaki, and honestly, he’s a phenomenal artist! Guts is seriously a tough character to get right, and Kurosaki-san pulls it off brilliantly!
