The first draft of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had a different villain and included the deaths of several important characters. Recent reports show that the movie’s script went through many revisions and explored different storylines before Marvel decided on the final version.
Doctor Strange almost fought a different villain in Multiverse of Madness
Initially, the movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was going to center around a battle with Nightmare as the primary villain, and Wanda Maximoff was planned to team up with Doctor Strange to take him down.
MyTimeToShineHello shared that the movie originally featured Wanda as a heroic character, not a villain. The first draft involved Nightmare as the main enemy, with Wanda assisting Doctor Strange in finding and defeating him. However, screenwriter Michael Waldron later revised the story, ultimately making Wanda the antagonist.
Kevin Feige gave the green light to change the story and ordered a complete rewrite of the plot. The team even thought about using Chthon as the main villain, but Feige decided to hold onto that idea, potentially for a future movie focused on Scarlet Witch.
Originally, a scene showed Mordo from the main Marvel universe trying to kill Wanda. Director Sam Raimi revealed in the film’s commentary that Wanda succeeded, decapitating him and presenting his head to Doctor Strange. However, the scene was ultimately cut because it slowed down the movie’s flow.
I recently read an interview with Elizabeth Olsen where she talked about WandaVision, and it was so interesting! She said she wasn’t involved in the reshoots because she was busy filming ‘Love and Death,’ so everything you see of her in the show is what she originally filmed. Apparently, the decision for Wanda to become a villain actually happened during the main filming process, and she was totally on board with it – she really embraced the darker turn instead of being hesitant about it. It’s cool to hear she was so excited about it!
Screenwriter Waldron revealed that an early draft of the story almost had Wanda kill the Wasp. The idea was that the Wasp would shrink down and fly at Wanda, and Wanda would simply clap her hands, crushing her. While this scene didn’t make it into the final cut, Wanda did end up killing several other characters, including Mr. Fantastic, Captain Carter, an alternate version of Captain Marvel, and Professor X.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now streaming on Disney+.
