From the very beginning, Star Trek has been about venturing into the unknown, and that’s a major reason it’s become such a beloved and enduring science fiction series. Even with numerous films and spin-offs, the franchise consistently surprises us with new directions, though we don’t always agree with the choices made by those in charge.
The recent cancellation of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was surprising, especially considering its potential and the talented people working on it. On a brighter note, Paramount announced at CinemaCon (according to Collider) that a new Star Trek movie is in development. While the last Star Trek film was released in 2016, the franchise has a long history of movies, so a new one always seemed likely. However, this next film will be different: it will introduce a completely new cast of characters, effectively ending the storyline that began with Chris Pine as Captain Kirk.
Chris Pine first appeared in the Star Trek franchise in the 2009 film directed by J.J. Abrams, alongside actors like Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldaña, and Simon Pegg. Though Leonard Nimoy also made an appearance as Spock, Abrams’ Star Trek wasn’t just a restart of the series; it also opened up the possibility of multiple timelines, giving filmmakers choices about which elements of the original story to use in future movies.
Despite the financial and critical success of the recent Star Trek films – including Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond – Paramount Pictures is planning a fresh approach to the franchise. While the actors from those movies have said they’d be willing to return, and several directors like Quentin Tarantino, Noah Hawley, and Matt Shakman have proposed their own ideas, there haven’t been any significant announcements about the future of Star Trek in quite some time.
Last autumn, news surfaced that Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the directors of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, were starting work on a new Star Trek movie. The Star Trek franchise on Paramount+ has already jumped around its own timeline, with shows set in the past, future, and branching off from the main series. Right now, it’s unknown where this new film will fit into the Star Trek universe, who will star in it, or if Goldstein and Daley will actually complete the project.
