Be warned, this discusses major plot points from Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 5, “The Grand Design.” Seven years after Iron Man’s iconic death – a scene still considered one of the most impactful in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – the MCU has delivered another powerful on-screen death. However, unlike most memorable Marvel deaths which happen during action-packed battles, this one is unique and demonstrates the franchise’s ability to give long-standing characters compelling and unexpected farewells.
Generally, Marvel characters become famous for their deaths when they’ve been around for a long time, appeared in a lot of movies and shows, and played a key role in the story. These deaths hit especially hard when it’s a hero who dies, because villains are often expected to be defeated. Iron Man’s death in Avengers: Endgame perfectly fits this pattern, but what just happened in Daredevil: Born Again was different – and it worked incredibly well.
Vanessa’s Death in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Is One of Marvel’s All-Time Greats

The fifth episode of Born Again, titled “The Grand Design,” centers around Vanessa (Ayelet Zure) and the aftermath of Bullseye’s (Wilson Bethel) attack. Throughout the episode, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) vigilantly watches over his injured wife, hoping she’ll pull through. Though she briefly regains consciousness, Vanessa ultimately dies from her injuries. While a Marvel death might typically be filled with action, this episode is surprisingly quiet and focuses on the emotional impact. What makes it even more compelling is that both Vanessa and Fisk are complex characters, not traditional heroes. Considering Vanessa’s history – she first appeared in Daredevil Season 1 and wasn’t a villain then – Born Again is justified in giving her death such a significant and poignant portrayal.
“The Grand Design” is Ayelet Zurer’s 24th appearance as Vanessa.
As Vanessa’s health faded in the hospital, the episode “The Grand Design” found a unique way to tell her story. Through flashbacks showing events we hadn’t seen before, the episode mirrored the larger narrative of Born Again and was able to creatively explore her past. This allowed for a striking visual contrast: current scenes had the polished look of the Disney+ series, while flashbacks adopted the darker, more grounded style of the original Netflix Daredevil. They even changed the screen shape to match the feel of each time period. Vanessa’s approaching death was key to making this storytelling approach work.
How the Fallout of Vanessa’s Demise Will Impact ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Going Forward

Wilson Fisk already strongly opposes vigilantes and has assembled a task force to eliminate them. However, his hatred has intensified since Bullseye killed Vanessa. Because Daredevil was present during the attack, Fisk is even more determined to find and punish both him and Bullseye. Driven by grief and love for his late wife, Fisk will relentlessly pursue vengeance, meaning the vigilantes of New York must be extra cautious to avoid his wrath.
Vanessa’s calm demeanor had been a key factor in preventing New York’s governor from attempting to remove Mayor Fisk from office due to his controversial policies. With her gone, that effort is likely to resume. While Fisk won’t give up power easily, administrative hurdles could ultimately force him out of office and back into a life of crime, fueling his desire for revenge against both politicians and masked heroes. One thing is certain: the loss of Vanessa will fundamentally change both Wilson Fisk’s character and the direction of the Daredevil: Born Again series.
