New John Wick movie confirmed to bring back a fan favourite – here’s why

In the forthcoming spin-off of the “John Wick” series, we’ll see the return of a beloved character cherished by fans.

In May 2024, a movie was officially announced, where Donnie Yen once again takes on the character of the blind assassin that he played in “John Wick: Chapter 4.” Notably, he is not just acting but also plays a crucial role behind the scenes as an executive producer and director for this project.

According to Variety, it’s been announced that Yen will once again play Shimazu Akira, a role she had previously in the same movie, alongside Rina Sawayama.

It’s not entirely unexpected, as the end-credits sequence of “John Wick: Chapter 4” features Akira challenging Caine in the city of Paris.

Thrilled beyond words, I can’t wait to have Rina join us once more on this thrilling adventure! I’m eager to do my best in bringing her captivating character, who left us spellbound in ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’, to even greater heights!

According to the director of John Wick, Chad Stahelski (who is also a producer on Caine), Rina’s performance in Chapter 4 was incredible and he’s eagerly anticipating seeing her interact with Caine again.

Adam Fogelson, head of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, expressed excitement as well, saying: “John Wick: Chapter 4 introduced a host of intriguing, unique characters such as Akira. We’re overjoyed that Rina will rejoin the series again.

In his words, “Caine and Akira still owe each other something, and the upcoming installment of their tales promises to be intense.” Meanwhile, Basil Iwanyk expressed excitement, noting that Sawayama would significantly enhance the movie.

Although specifics about the project remain limited, it’s rumored that Caine will pursue the main character following his release from duties tied to the High Table. The movie is believed to be influenced by the fast-paced action-thriller genre for which Yen has become well-known in Hong Kong.

Caine is the third spin-off in the action franchise. The first one, titled “The Continental,” will debut on Prime Video in 2023. This three-part miniseries revolves around a character named Winston Scott, who is played by Colin Woodell, but was initially portrayed by Ian McShane in the main series of films.

In the upcoming month, the movie titled “Ballerina” is set to premiere. This film takes place between the incidents in “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” and “John Wick: Chapter 4”. The character Eve Macarro, played by Ana de Armas, embarks on a quest for revenge after her father’s demise.

Ballerina is released in cinemas on 6 June. Caine is in production.
