Netflix’s Historic Tom Hardy & Timothy Olyphant Movie, Havoc, is Perfect

When major action stars team up, the results can be incredible, and that’s exactly what happened with 2025’s Havoc. Directed by Gareth Evans, known for his work on Gangs of London and the Indonesian films The Raid and its sequel, Havoc paired Tom Hardy and Timothy Olyphant in a visually stunning and violent film. What set Havoc apart from typical action movies wasn’t a quest for justice, but a look at the complicated ethics of two flawed police officers – both corrupt, but with different levels of morality.

The film starts a little bleakly, but things quickly turn into a wild chase! It’s all about a gang trying to steal washing machines – and get this, they’re packed with cocaine! – and the narcotics detectives, Vincent, Hayes, Jake, and Cortez, are right on their tail. The leader of the thieves turns out to be the son of a mayoral candidate, Charlie, with his girlfriend Mia. They do manage to deliver the drugs to this guy, Tsui, who’s a big shot in the Triad, but then things get really messy when masked people kill him. Suddenly, Charlie and Mia are caught in the middle and become targets for the Chinese syndicate, which puts them in a seriously dangerous situation.

Tom Hardy And Timothy Olyphant Played Two Sides Of The Same Coin

Tom Hardy and Timothy Olyphant are both fantastic action stars, each bringing a unique style to the genre. Hardy often plays damaged characters deeply involved in corrupt systems, like a narcotics detective struggling with his job, a failing marriage, and a difficult relationship with his daughter. This detective is haunted by accidentally shooting an undercover cop, a secret covered up by his colleague, Vincent (played by Timothy Olyphant), who actually fired the fatal shot.

Timothy Olyphant plays Vincent, a corrupt officer similar to Walker, who is secretly paid by a man named Lawrence Beaumont running for mayor. However, Vincent is far more ruthless and motivated by personal gain than Walker. Unlike Walker, who feels guilt, Vincent enjoys using his power and has a team of officers who follow his orders. Meanwhile, Walker wants to turn his life around and agrees to locate Charlie before a dangerous gang eliminates him, hoping to do one last good deed for Beaumont.

From the start, it’s obvious that Walker and Vincent are both motivated by self-interest, not a sense of duty to the police. However, they have different ethical codes. Even while Walker undertakes a risky and violent mission to rescue Beaumont – a mission that does succeed in preventing two innocent people from being wrongly accused of murder – he comes to realize that Vincent is his real enemy. Vincent had partnered with Ching, a former Triad member, to shoot Tsui and steal a shipment of cocaine, intending to sell it for a profit.

The central conflict in the story isn’t just about Chinese drug gangs influencing elections; it really boils down to the showdown between Walker and Vincent, who are working towards completely different goals. Timothy Olyphant and Tom Hardy are fantastic together in Havoc because they both bring such unique energy to action roles. Hardy is famous for fully immersing himself in characters, as demonstrated in films like The Dark Knight Rises, Mad Max: Fury Road, Warrior, Venom, and The Revenant. He completely transforms – his voice, his physicality, everything – to create incredibly realistic and powerful performances. Hardy’s raw, intense style perfectly contrasts with the polished and refined presence Olyphant brings to his roles.

Timothy Olyphant brings a subtle but unsettling energy to his roles. He’s known for playing characters who are calm and refined, favoring a sense of style over flashy action. Whether it’s Raylan Givens in Justified, his work in Deadwood, Hitman, or The Mandalorian, he consistently maintains a cool composure even in chaotic situations. The dynamic between his characters and their counterparts is captivating, created by the contrast between his controlled demeanor and the other character’s more erratic behavior.

Havoc Is A Hardcore Action Flick

The film ranked as the seventh most-watched movie on the streaming platform in the first half of 2025. Its success stemmed from the powerful on-screen chemistry between Tom Hardy and Timothy Olyphant, combined with incredibly well-executed action sequences. Fans particularly praised scenes like the intense nightclub shootout and the explosive, yet surprisingly emotional, final showdown at Walker’s cabin.

Although the plot occasionally fell into familiar tropes, the reveal of Vincent as the mastermind behind everything was brilliantly done. Havoc is a bold and energetic film that immediately delivers for fans of the genre, while also exploring complex themes of corruption and power. Timothy Olyphant and Tom Hardy share incredible chemistry, making their on-screen partnership a highlight.
