Netflix’s Bold 2-Part Cyberpunk Show Is Set In One Of The Greatest Sci-Fi Universes Of All Time

Cyberpunk is back in a big way on television, and Netflix has been leading the charge. They’ve consistently supported bold and imaginative cyberpunk stories, like the thought-provoking mystery of Altered Carbon and the action-packed, visually stunning Cyberpunk: Edgerunners – projects that few other studios were willing to take on.

Cyberpunk is having a moment on TV right now, but it’s been around for decades. Even before streaming services started making big, futuristic shows, classic anime and live-action series were building the groundwork for the genre we know today. That’s why one Netflix series stands out – it links today’s cyberpunk shows to the influential Ghost in the Shell franchise.

Netflix released Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 in 2020, aiming to update the well-known cyberpunk story for today’s viewers. The show’s use of computer-generated imagery was controversial, particularly among fans who preferred the older anime style. However, the series is a noteworthy attempt to revitalize a complex and influential cyberpunk world, especially as the genre gains popularity again. Regardless of how people reacted to it, SAC_2045 is a significant addition to modern cyberpunk storytelling.

SAC_2045 Returns To Ghost In The Shell At Its Peak

Though it looks and feels very different, Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 isn’t a fresh start for the series. It continues the story from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, a highly-regarded cyberpunk anime that began in 2002. While the original 1995 Ghost in the Shell film is separate, Stand Alone Complex created its own timeline and was known for combining the franchise’s deep ideas with a crime-solving, episodic format.

Even years after its release, Stand Alone Complex is still praised for expertly combining thought-provoking themes with exciting action. The show seamlessly shifts between exploring complex ideas, like what it means to be conscious in a digital world, and delivering intense tactical missions and spy stories. Ghost in the Shell: SAC also boasts a remarkably detailed world where cybernetic technology and information warfare are integrated into the fabric of daily life. Its ideas feel surprisingly modern and continue to gain relevance with time.

As a huge fan of the Ghost in the Shell franchise, I knew SAC_2045 had a lot riding on it. It wasn’t just another revival – it was a continuation of the Stand Alone Complex storyline, which many of us consider the best and most complete version of the Ghost in the Shell world ever put on screen. The original series set such a high bar, so expectations were incredibly high for this new installment.

Netflix’s Ghost In The Shell Show Didn’t Quite Live Up To Expectations

Before its release in 2020, there was a lot of anticipation for Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. The previous live-action Ghost in the Shell movie from 2017, starring Scarlett Johansson, hadn’t been well-received, and many fans were disappointed. So, SAC_2045 had a lot of pressure on it to revive interest in this classic anime franchise.

As a big fan of Ghost in the Shell, I’ll say this about the Netflix series: it definitely swung for something new. The switch to completely CGI animation gave SAC_2045 a really unique look for the franchise. Instead of trying to copy the hand-drawn style of Stand Alone Complex, they went for a much cleaner, more modern visual style, probably to grab a wider audience on streaming. It worked for some, but honestly, a lot of us longtime fans felt like it lost some of the atmosphere that made the original Ghost in the Shell so special.

As a big fan of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, I have to admit SAC_2045 didn’t quite hit the same intellectual and storytelling highs. While it still explored cool concepts, the narrative felt a bit scattered at times. It felt like they prioritized action over the slower, more methodical investigations that made Section 9’s cases – like the Laughing Man arc – so gripping and memorable. That tight, layered tension just wasn’t there as consistently, which was a real disappointment.

Despite its flaws, it’s a mistake to completely dismiss SAC_2045. While it didn’t reach the same level of success as Stand Alone Complex, it broadened the Ghost in the Shell universe and brought the series to a new generation of viewers on Netflix. That makes Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 a significant part of the franchise’s story. It showed that Ghost in the Shell could still evolve and try new things, even if those changes weren’t universally appreciated by longtime fans.
