HBO has become a leader in fantasy television, building on the success of its earlier hit, Game of Thrones, which remains a hugely popular and influential show. While Game of Thrones set a very high standard that others have found difficult to reach, it didn’t fully represent everything the fantasy genre has to offer.
Both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are excellent shows, but they focus more on dramatic, mature content than classic fantasy. Game of Thrones became popular largely due to its shocking and violent scenes. Traditional fantasy usually offers a more hopeful outlook, with clear heroes and villains, something Game of Thrones didn’t emphasize—at least, not until recently.
The world of Game of Thrones is growing, with the new series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms coming in 2026. While it takes place in the familiar setting of Westeros, this six-episode show has a noticeably different feel than previous Game of Thrones installments. It still has surprising moments, but the story and atmosphere are generally more optimistic and comforting. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms feels like a classic fantasy adventure, and that’s something many viewers have been wanting.
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Fixes An Unfortunate Trend Started By Game Of Thrones
Game of Thrones dramatically changed fantasy television, and its success led to a surge in similar shows. While this boosted the popularity of the genre, many new series focused more on shocking moments than on strong fantasy storytelling. This is particularly noticeable in adaptations of books, where shows like The Witcher sometimes prioritize spectacle over staying true to the original source material.
The huge success of Game of Thrones has led to dramatically increased budgets for fantasy television shows. Creating visually impressive fantasy worlds is expensive, and Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is now the most costly TV show ever made. Like some other recent fantasy series, it’s also faced criticism for deviating from established lore. It appears that these high production costs are now considered necessary to achieve a hit fantasy show.
It’s ironic that Game of Thrones, the series that unintentionally started a trend of big-budget fantasy, proved that lavish spending isn’t actually required for success. The spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, defied recent fantasy conventions and still became a major hit. Surprisingly, it had the lowest budget per episode and the highest first-season rating on Rotten Tomatoes of any show in the Game of Thrones universe.
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Still Has A Problem To Overcome
With just six episodes, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showed that classic fantasy storytelling is still relevant. Now, this Game of Thrones spin-off needs to demonstrate that a strong, straightforward fantasy story can succeed even without constant twists and surprises. This could be a challenge, considering the show’s short seasons took a long time to produce.
Unlike other Game of Thrones series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has shorter episodes. It’s also faster to make than Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, though it will still be a significant undertaking. To keep viewers engaged, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms ideally needs a new season each year. Fans of this charming and optimistic show won’t want to wait the usual two years between releases, but achieving that quick turnaround may be difficult for production.
Whether A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will continue to be successful remains to be seen. HBO needs to demonstrate that this show has staying power, just like their other popular series. For now, it’s clear that fantasy shows can offer much more than viewers previously expected from Game of Thrones.
