Everything to Remember About The Bear Before Season 5

Major developments are coming in Season 5 of the FX show, which will be its last. To fully understand the upcoming season, and building on what happened in Season 4, you’ll also need to watch the special prequel, released in early May 2026, as it will likely be important to the overall story.

The popular restaurant, The Bear, is still striving for a Michelin Star, and its chef, Carmy, is grappling with personal issues, leaving many questions unanswered. Considering it’s been a year since the last season and the new one isn’t due until June 25, 2026, viewers might need a refresher. The events of the season finale could also dramatically shift the direction of the show.

The Bear Is Changing Hands as Steps Back

The team’s success hinged on this, so they enlisted experienced players like Luca and Jessica to boost morale and help everyone work together smoothly.

The entire operation was financed by Jimmy (Oliver Platt), but he warned there was a limit to how long he could keep investing. Facing financial difficulties himself, he couldn’t provide any further funding. By the end of the episode, that deadline had passed.

Albert Schnurr, portrayed by the late Rob Reiner, was a memorable character who offered to help Carmy grow The Bear. We last saw him guiding Ebra, teaching him how to best utilize his skills to improve the drive-thru service. Because this was Reiner’s final acting role, the future of Albert Schnurr on the show is now uncertain.

The main takeaway from the finale is Carmy’s decision to take a break from managing the restaurant to prioritize his well-being. He realizes he’s lost sight of who he is as a person, separate from being a chef, and hasn’t taken the time to figure that out. He’s also finally acknowledging that he’s been pushing himself too hard.

He trusts Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) to run things at the restaurant, and she’ll only agree if Natalie (Abby Elliott) and Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) are involved as partners. He initially thinks this is just her way of being nice to him, but Sydney assures him she genuinely needs his help and values his contributions, explaining she can’t succeed without him.

Personal Journeys Shape Each Character in The Bear

Besides Carmy making a big decision, and Sydney and Richie preparing for what promises to be the most challenging part of The Bear so far, the show also features compelling personal stories that explain why it’s so memorable.

Sydney spends much of the season torn between two options: taking a job with Chef Adam Shapiro – a real chef and business owner playing himself – or staying at The Bear. While she’s frustrated at The Bear because Carmy often makes decisions without consulting her, she worries that leaving would mean abandoning her friends and coworkers. The new job with Shapiro offers her the chance to have more control over the restaurant’s direction, particularly the menu, but she’s hesitant to take it.

Honestly, I was so relieved when she turned down that big job! Looking back at how Shapiro treated her – all those little digs and then his awful reaction when she said no – it’s clear he wasn’t offering the dream job he’d painted. It would have been totally different once she actually started. But man, it still stung when Carmy made his announcement. He wasn’t just her boss or coworker, he was a friend and someone she really looked up to, and that made it so much harder.

A key turning point for Carmy is a long overdue conversation with his mother, who finally apologizes for her past mistakes. This allows him to stop blaming her and, more importantly, to accept himself and find joy in life beyond just his work as a chef.

Donna is also working on getting better, dealing with her addiction and trying to make things right with people. Though she still has her signature blunt personality, we see glimpses of a softer side. Carmy notices she’s genuinely trying. Spending time with his mother helps Carmy realize he needs to create distance to avoid repeating harmful patterns with Sydney and the rest of the team.

Tina, played by Liza Colón-Zayas, Marcus (Lionel Boyce), and Ebra all have opportunities to demonstrate their skills and prove they deserve their positions. With Luca’s support and her own strong will, Tina manages to accomplish something she previously thought was unattainable: preparing a complex dish in less than three minutes.

Although the restaurant is still working towards its goals, Marcus receives a wonderful surprise: Natalie announces that Food & Wine magazine has named him one of the Best New Chefs of the year. All his hard work and creativity in baking finally paid off, and it was a heartwarming moment, especially considering how recently he’s been grieving the loss of his mother.

Feeling out of place in his new, upscale surroundings and remembering the challenges of culinary school, Ebra began looking for ways to make a greater impact. With guidance from Albert, he focused on his strengths and transformed his small venture, The Beef, into a thriving business. Ebra was enthusiastic about Albert’s suggestion to grow the business, which offered him a chance to take on a more significant role.

The Bear’s ‘Gary’ Episode Could Change Everything

This story takes place before Michael’s death and centers around a road trip he and Richie took together years earlier. It’s meant to highlight how close they were – they were like brothers – and shows a specific memory Richie shares with Carmy during their last conversation in Season 4.

The season ends with a scene that jumps back to the present, hinting at events in Season 5. We see Richie in his car, lost in thought about Michael and their previous trip. This likely happens soon after he learns he’ll be co-running the restaurant with Sydney and Natalie, following his conversation with Carmy. Just as he drives away, another car crashes into the side of his vehicle.

Now that Richie is doing well – he has a good job, a positive attitude, and a healthy relationship with his ex for the sake of their children – an accident would be devastating. Viewers of Gary are especially concerned. Even if he recovers, he’ll likely be injured and unable to work for a while.

Here’s a possible reason Carmy delays his departure: while the restaurant would likely be successful with Sydney in charge, she might struggle without the support of both him and Richie. This could lead Carmy to feel obligated to stay on, even if only in a limited capacity.

The final season of The Bear will likely focus again on the restaurant’s success and the pursuit of a Michelin star. However, at its heart, the show is really about something more: how people overcome challenges, grow personally, and heal from past trauma – especially when they support each other. This season will be a major test for Richie as he deals with difficulties, and a reminder for everyone involved about the power of teamwork and achieving shared goals.
