Netflix’s ’30s-set historical drama announces new cast including Outlander star Laura Donnelly

I’m so excited about the new Netflix series, Kennedy! They’ve been adding some amazing actors, and now Laura Donnelly from Outlander is joining the cast. It’s going to be a historical drama about the Kennedy family, starting with how Joe Kennedy Sr. and his wife Rose built their power back in the 1930s. I can’t wait to see it!

Liam Donnelly will star as Rose in the upcoming film, alongside Michael Fassbender, who plays Joe Kennedy, the father of John F. Kennedy (Jack). Joshuah Melnick, known for his work on Saint X, will play JFK himself, and Nick Robinson, from Maid, will portray Joe Kennedy Jr., JFK’s older brother.

The cast also includes Ben Miles (from The Crown) as Eddie Moore, a long-time assistant to Joe Sr.; Lydia Peckham (Nuremberg) as Rosemary, his daughter; Saura Lightfoot-Leon (American Primeval) as another daughter, Kick; Cole Doman (The Mastermind) as Lem Billings, a close friend of JFK; and Imogen Poots (All of You) as the famous actress Gloria Swanson.

The series Kennedy draws inspiration from Fredrik Logevall’s book, JFK: Coming of Age in the American Century, 1917–1956. Sam Shaw of Castle Rock is the showrunner, and Thomas Vinterberg, known for Another Round, directed the first and last episodes.

The series promises a personal exploration of the family’s lives – their romances, conflicts, and hardships – revealing how they built a lasting legacy and influenced the world as we know it.

The series starts in the 1930s and follows the remarkable story of Joe and Rose Kennedy and their nine children. It particularly focuses on Jack, their second son, and his difficulties growing up in the shadow of his successful older brother.

Shaw described the Kennedy family’s story as being uniquely American – a blend of high drama like Shakespeare and the captivating, yet more accessible, storylines of a soap opera like The Bold and the Beautiful.

I was really blown away by Fredrik Logevall’s biography. It’s not just about the Kennedys as legends, but a deep dive into their lives, their struggles, and what motivated them. It actually made me think a lot about where we are today, how we got here, and where we might be headed – it’s that insightful!

I’m excited to collaborate with Eric Roth, Thomas Vinterberg, and our talented team to tell this story about a family and a changing world, especially at a time when history feels so relevant to today.

Kennedy will stream on Netflix.
