Netflix has reportedly canceled all future plans to expand the Army of the Dead franchise
As a die-hard fan who’s been through the undead apocalypse with Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead series, I can’t help but feel like I just woke up from a zombie-slaying dream to find out it’s all over. I mean, we were talking about sequels and an animated series, for Pete’s sake! It feels like someone pulled the rug out from under us right when we were getting comfortable in this post-apocalyptic wasteland.
Unfortunately, horror enthusiasts, it appears that additional installments in the “Army of the Dead” series, as previously hinted, will not materialize. Reports suggest that all planned future movies and the animated spin-off have been apparently shelved without announcement. Further details are provided below.
In September 2020, before “Army of the Dead” had been released, Netflix revealed their plans to collaborate with Zack Snyder once more for both a prequel movie and an animated prequel series. Later, in July 2021, Netflix officially gave the go-ahead for a direct sequel to “Army of the Dead,” with Snyder expected to start working on this project following his completion of “Rebel Moon.”
Though the film “Army of Thieves” released in 2021, neither the animated series “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas” nor the live-action sequel “Planet of the Dead” have been produced yet. The former is the official title for the animated series, and the latter is what we’re calling the sequel.
Based on TheWrap’s report, there are no more plans for additional films or an animated series in the franchise. Prior to the release of the director’s cut of “Rebel Moon” on Netflix, Snyder suggested that the series and sequel might have been canceled. However, he also indicated that the universe of “Army of the Dead” won’t completely cease to exist, as it will feature a haunted house maze at Six Flags Fright Fest this year.
It’s worth noting that neither Netflix nor Snyder have released an official statement regarding the status of “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas” and “Planet of the Dead.” Given the prolonged silence about these projects, it’s not unreasonable to suspect they may have been shelved. Interestingly, there’s been a trend of Netflix cancelling several upcoming animated productions recently.
