The upcoming Netflix movie, Nineteen Steps, which is based on Millie Bobby Brown’s first novel, has a big update: an Oscar-winning director is now on board to direct the period drama.
According to Deadline, Tom Hooper will direct the upcoming project, and Millie Bobby Brown will star in it. Hooper is famous for directing The King’s Speech, which was a major success at the 2011 Oscars, winning four awards including Best Picture and Best Director.
This is great news for Brown, as Hooper has a history of directing actors who go on to win major awards. Colin Firth, Anne Hathaway, and Alicia Vikander all won Oscars for their performances in films directed by Hooper: The King’s Speech, Les Misérables, and The Danish Girl, respectively.

Maisie Williams will not only act in the movie, but will also produce it with her husband, Jake Bongiovi. The screenplay is being written by Anthony McCarten, who has been nominated for an Oscar four times.
I just finished reading Nineteen Steps, and it was so good! It came out in 2023, and it’s actually based on the author’s grandmother’s life. The story follows a teen growing up in Britain during World War II, and it really captures what it must have been like to be a young person during that time. Kathleen McGurl did a fantastic job, even though it was ghostwritten!
What to Read Next
The novel received positive reviews when it was first published. Author Fiona Davis described it as a captivating and impressive first book, praising its story of young love, heartfelt regrets, and the pursuit of truth as truly spellbinding (according to Amazon).
Millie Bobby Brown, famous for her roles in Stranger Things and Enola Holmes, had said she hoped her book would be adapted into a movie or show, explaining that it was her original goal when she wrote it.
I’m eager to keep creating, and this feels like a strong starting point. I’m particularly drawn to projects with personal meaning, and especially those that focus on women’s stories. Ultimately, I want my work to really connect with and move people emotionally.”

The actor is making good progress on Nineteen Steps, but recently left another Netflix series called Perfect. Perfect was based on the true story of Olympic gymnast Kerri Strug.
Originally, Cate Shortland was set to direct Perfect after Gia Coppola left the project. However, the film was cancelled earlier this month when its lead actor left due to disagreements about the creative direction.
Nineteen Steps currently has no release date.
The latest issue of Living Legends, a beautiful 100-page, full-color tribute to Sir David Attenborough, is now available! You can purchase it at newsstands or online.
