I recently discovered “Friday Night Lights,” Michael B. Jordan’s fantastic sports drama from the early 2000s, is now streaming on Paramount+! And the best part? All five seasons dropped on May 1st, so you can binge-watch the whole thing right now.
This month, all episodes of Friday Night Lights became available on the streaming service. Along with the show, several series from the Battlestar Galactica universe, including its spin-off Caprica, were also added. Friday Night Lights, which aired from 2006 to 2011, centers on a high school football team in a small town and tackles serious topics such as racism and substance abuse. Jordan joined the show as a main cast member for its final two seasons.
Friday Night Lights Gained a Cult Following Over the Years
Although Friday Night Lights received almost universal praise and was a well-made show, it didn’t attract a large audience during its original run on NBC and later on The 101 Network. While those who did watch became dedicated fans, the viewership numbers weren’t high enough to sustain the series.
As a huge fan of Friday Night Lights, I was so relieved when it didn’t get canceled after season two! Apparently, NBC made a deal with DirecTV to keep it going – they co-produced three more seasons, which gave the show the time it needed to really develop and end on its own terms. It’s amazing to me that we got a full 76 episodes, and now you can stream them all on Paramount+.
Jordan’s introduction to Friday Night Lights happened at a crucial moment in the show’s run. The series, starring Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, is notable for them being the only two actors who appeared in every single episode.
When Jordan joined the show in seasons four and five, the story moved to the East Dillon Lions, introducing a new set of characters. One of these was Vince Howard, a naturally gifted athlete who was new to football. The episodes followed Vince’s journey as he became the team’s star quarterback, and also showed his personal struggles, including helping his mother get treatment for addiction.
Jordan Recently Paid Tribute to Friday Night Lights at the Oscars
Although Michael B. Jordan wasn’t a major character in Friday Night Lights, the role clearly made a lasting impression on him. Fans of the show recently pointed out similarities between his character on the series and his acceptance speech when he won Best Actor at the Oscars.
During the awards ceremony, after accepting his award, Jordan gave a shout-out to his Friday Night Lights co-star, Jesse Plemons. He affectionately patted Plemons’ chest twice, a reference to the show’s iconic ‘Texas Forever’ gesture. It was a brief but touching moment showing Jordan still cherishes his beginnings. Since his time on the series, he’s gone on to star in many hit films, including Creed and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Friday Night Lights is now streaming on Paramount+.
