Cursed Energy is the core power source in the world of jujutsu, fueling the abilities of sorcerers. Skilled sorcerers transform this energy into potent attacks called Cursed Techniques. These techniques are often inherited through family or developed with intense training. Some sorcerers further enhance their power using Domain Expansion, which creates a sealed-off space to trap and defeat their opponents.
Domain Expansion isn’t something every jujutsu sorcerer can do, but Megumi Fushiguro, a main character in Jujutsu Kaisen, is one of the few who can. His technique, called Chimera Shadow Garden, gets stronger each time he uses it, though it does have some weaknesses. Chimera Shadow Garden has the potential to be incredibly powerful, but Megumi needs to fully control it to unlock its true capabilities.
Megumi Fushiguro’s Chimera Shadow Garden is Incomplete
Megumi Fushiguro’s Chimera Shadow Garden is likely the most powerful Domain Expansion we’ve seen. It creates a complete barrier, trapping opponents and letting him summon many strong spirit shikigami. However, it’s also considered the least developed of all the Domain Expansions shown so far.
A Domain Expansion isn’t fully effective if the user can’t maximize its power, forcing the sorcerer to fight with restrictions. While Megumi’s Chimera Shadow Garden is still strong – allowing him to summon many creatures and clones to overwhelm opponents – it’s easier to break than the Domain Expansions of Gojo Satoru or Sukuna. Because of this, Megumi only uses it when absolutely necessary to gain an edge in battle.
Honestly, what’s a little sad about Megumi’s Chimera Shadow Garden is that he never quite reached its full potential. It’s like, to really unlock everything, he needs to fully tame every single Shikigami he summons. Imagine if he could tame one of the absolute strongest creatures we’ve seen in Jujutsu Kaisen – he’d be a force to be reckoned with! He didn’t quite get there, but even with the Shikigami he has tamed, his abilities are seriously impressive.
Chimera Shadow Garden Holds a Unique Accomplishment in Jujutsu Kaisen
Although Chimera Shadow Garden isn’t as powerful or refined as some other Domain Expansions, it’s unique in one way: it’s the only one a Jujutsu High student has used three times in battle. Only Gojo Satoru (seven times) and Sukuna (five times) have deployed their Domain Expansions more often, and they typically used them repeatedly against each other.
Megumi Fushiguro first demonstrated his Chimera Shadow Garden technique in episode 23, “The Origin of Obedience, Part 2,” while battling Fingerbearer, a member of the Cursed Womb: Death Paintings. By using it alongside his Divine Dog: Totality within his Domain Expansion, he gained the advantage and won the fight. He later used Chimera Shadow Garden again during the Culling Game, defeating Reggie Star with a second summoning of Divine Dog: Totality.
Within the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, Megumi Fushiguro is one of only two sorcerers who have directly defeated opponents while using his Domain Expansion. Considering this, and the fact that the other instance also resulted in a win, Chimera Shadow Garden is clearly an incredibly powerful technique. In total, Chimera Shadow Garden has been used four times – twice for direct wins, and twice indirectly – achieving a 100% win rate every time it’s been employed.
Chimera Shadow Garden is a Version of the Ten Shadows Technique
Okay, so when Megumi activates his Domain Expansion, it’s seriously cool! He basically floods the area with this dark stuff that lets him instantly create any of his shikigami. It’s still a developing technique, so hits aren’t guaranteed, but it massively amps up his Ten Shadows Technique. What’s amazing is he can now summon tons of clones – of himself and his shikigami! It’s like an endless onslaught of attacks coming from all directions, totally overwhelming anyone he’s fighting.
Besides the inherent dangers, Megumi’s main limitation is his inability to create a barrier around his domain. To overcome this, he uses his Domain Expansion indoors, effectively trapping opponents and making escape much harder. Once inside, he uses shadow animals to relentlessly attack until his target is defeated or the domain is destroyed.
Megumi Fushiguro’s Chimera Shadow Garden Was Briefly Stolen by Sukuna
A strong indicator of a domain expansion’s power is whether Sukuna considers it valuable enough to steal. In Jujutsu Kaisen, specifically chapter 212 and season 2, Sukuna takes control of Megumi’s body. This allows Sukuna to use Megumi’s abilities, including his domain expansion, and combine them with his own techniques, significantly boosting their effectiveness.
Although Sukuna’s domain expansion is much stronger than Megumi’s, he’s using a modified version of Megumi’s incomplete Chimera Shadow Garden, revealing just how powerful it can be. Within this stolen domain, Sukuna demonstrates complete control by unleashing a massive Mahoraga and enhancing the domain’s abilities with his own techniques. Even though Megumi hadn’t fully mastered his domain, this event provided a clear look at the immense potential of Chimera Shadow Garden.
When Sukuna unexpectedly possessed Megumi’s body after a devastating turn of events, Yuji found himself facing an impossible battle. This shocking development also highlighted the immense danger of Sukuna and his Ten Shadows Technique in the hands of a malicious user. Had Megumi continued to develop his skills with further training from powerful sorcerers, his domain expansion, Chimera Shadow Garden, had the potential to be one of the strongest ever seen.
