Maya Jama reveals she’s ‘nervous’ as she shares health scare and urges fans to book smear tests

Maya Jama recently shared on Instagram that she experienced a health scare after a routine smear test.

The host of Love Island went straight to the doctor for a check-up after getting back from Ibiza, following the results of a recent smear test.

Maya admitted feeling anxious about her appointment, but encouraged her followers not to delay getting tested, especially since she’d experienced problems in the past.

She shared a photo of her Nike sneakers from the doctor’s waiting room, mentioning she’d had a fun 24 hours in Ibiza. She was there for a follow-up appointment after a recent smear test.

‘I have to get those cells burned off, feeling nervous but this is why smears are so important!’

In another picture, Maya took a selfie in the mirror. She was wearing a large white T-shirt, jeans, and sunglasses while sharing an update.

It turns out I didn’t need the cells destroyed with heat, just a small biopsy to keep an eye on them. This is a reminder to get checked if you’ve been delaying it.

In 2021, Maya encouraged her followers to schedule their cervical screenings, sharing that she had experienced health issues because she had put off getting hers done.

The presenter shared that she likely has early cell changes in her cervix because she delayed getting a test for a year.

Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, or CIN, involves changes in the cells of the cervix. Because it usually doesn’t cause any noticeable symptoms, it’s often only found during a routine Pap test (smear test).

Maya addressed her followers, sharing a serious message: she urged women who hadn’t already to get their smear tests, explaining that this important health check isn’t discussed often enough.

‘I know it seems butters and uncomfortable and awkward but it’s not that bad and it’s so important.

I recently needed a replacement because I waited a year for my follow-up appointment. It’s important to stay on top of these kinds of things.

She went on to explain that she usually struggles to talk about serious things, but she wanted to share what was happening because so many people had reached out saying they’d been meaning to ask about it.

I’m not a medical professional, but the doctor mentioned something called “CINs,” and he believes I might have CIN 2.

The first result is normal. The second shows cells that need to be watched closely, and the third indicates the presence of cancer or cells that could become cancerous.

Today, the doctor took a small tissue sample from inside my body. It’s being sent to a lab for testing, and I’ll get the results later.

It’s important to keep a close watch on these issues, and it’s best to address them quickly before they escalate into bigger problems.

It’s important to get this checked out, and it’s likely nothing serious. The doctors are experienced and have seen everything, so don’t feel embarrassed to get it looked at.

I realize it’s strange to think about, because I used to worry about people noticing small imperfections, but it really isn’t a big deal.

Love Island is officially returning soon! The start date has been announced, and the new season will be here in just a few weeks.

The popular ITV2 dating show will be returning for its 13th season very soon with Maya as the host.

The Sun has reported that Love Island will be back on from June 1, 2026.

According to a source, producers were thrilled with the success and drama of the recent All Stars season and are now planning a fast-paced summer series to keep the momentum going.

The show is featuring a particularly attractive and lively group of contestants this season, because ultimately, the success of the show depends on the people who are on it.

‘Everything looks set for kick off June 1 all being well with plans.

‘As All Stars proved, you never know what can happen!’

The Daily Mail has contacted ITV for comment.

Last year’s series of Love Island was on our screens between June 9 and August 4 2025.

Host Maya joined the show in January 2023 after taking over from Laura Whitmore, 40.

The latest season of Love Island, a spin-off called Love Island All Stars hosted by Maya, finished airing in January.

The show ran from January 15th to February 26th and featured former contestants going back to the famous villa in South Africa to look for love again.

Ciaran Davies and Samie Elishi were chosen as the winners by viewers, but sadly they broke up soon after getting back to the UK.
