Released in 2023 as a follow-up to Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was a bigger and more ambitious game. It continued the story of Peter Parker and Miles Morales, pitting them against some of Marvel’s most famous villains. The game received high praise for its story, characters, and how it played, even winning Action Game of the Year at the D.I.C.E. Awards and being considered one of the best games on the PlayStation 5. It sold over 2.5 million copies in its first day, so why are players now giving it mixed reviews?
Following the addition of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 to the PlayStation Plus Extra library in February, many new players experienced the popular sequel for free, swinging through New York City as Peter and Miles battled villains like Venom, Sandman, and Kraven. However, one player recently shared their disappointment on the r/PlayStationPlus subreddit, suggesting the game didn’t quite meet their expectations.
I was thrilled when Spider-Man 2 came to PlayStation Plus, but the gameplay didn’t quite live up to expectations. It’s a good thing I had a subscription, because I might have been disappointed if I’d purchased it. The fighting isn’t as fun as it was in the first game, and the enemies are repetitive. I’m about two-thirds of the way through, and so far, nothing new has been added to make the gameplay more engaging. The graphics are fantastic, but the story hasn’t really captured my attention.
So, I’ve been reading what other players are saying about Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and it seems like most of us had a good time with it. It’s definitely a fun game, but looking back, I don’t think many of us would pay full price ($70) for it again. One player put it perfectly: they beat the game and all the side stuff in around 20 hours – a great weekend experience! They were glad they didn’t drop $70 on it at launch, and just love swinging around New York. Another person said after finishing the first Spider-Man and Miles Morales, they couldn’t really get into the sequel. It felt like too much all at once, and the main story ended up feeling like a chore list instead of something genuinely fun. They actually preferred the gliding to the web-swinging for getting around!
Man, I absolutely loved Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. I went all-in and got the platinum trophy, and I’m still bummed about the cancelled DLC. Seriously, I don’t get the negativity around it. I actually finished it for the first time just last month – it’s just as good, if not better, than the original!
Good news for PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers: you can now download Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for free! If you’ve been hesitant to try it after seeing some mixed opinions, this is a great way to experience the game yourself without paying full price. Enjoy swinging through the city!
