Marvel Finally Confirms Luke Cage’s New Role in the MCU

Ever since Krysten Ritter was confirmed to be back in Daredevil: Born Again, Jessica Jones fans have been eagerly anticipating her appearance. She finally showed up in the episode “Requiem,” and even though it was a short scene, it delivered exactly what viewers hoped for. But her return also hinted at what might happen with Luke Cage in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially since his show ended with an unresolved cliffhanger in its second season.

Although it hasn’t been formally confirmed, photos from the set of Daredevil: Born Again suggest a connection to the earlier Daredevil seasons. The original series played a key role in introducing characters like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After initially distancing itself from those “Netflix shows,” Marvel is now acknowledging them as part of the official storyline with Daredevil: Born Again. This new series could bring the Defenders team back into the MCU, potentially finishing storylines left open, especially since Iron Fist and Luke Cage both ended with plans for a third season. Alternatively, it could kick off a fresh wave of more mature, street-level Marvel stories featuring the franchise’s most complex heroes.

Jessica Jones’ Return in Daredevil: Born Again Revealed a Lot About Luke Cage, Too

Recent episodes of Born Again have revealed details crucial to the overall plot. We’re learning more about the past of Wilson and Vanessa Fisk, the connection between Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson, and other key storylines. This focus on character history is probably consistent with the other shows in The Defenders series, which originally aired on Netflix.

As a huge fan of the Marvel Netflix shows, I was thrilled to finally see Jessica Jones and Daredevil join forces – it was a team-up I’d been waiting for! Interestingly, Luke Cage actually showed up in the Jessica Jones series first, before getting his own show. And just like the comic books, their connection felt really authentic and stayed strong even after their initial storylines wrapped up.

Their connection continued to develop. In the show Born Again, we learn Jessica has a ten-year-old daughter named Danielle. Luke Cage made a brief appearance in what turned out to be the final episode of Jessica Jones.

After their previous shows finished and before Born Again started, the story suggests Jessica and Luke got back together romantically. However, they don’t seem to be in a committed relationship now, unlike in the comics where having a daughter brought them closer and led to a lasting commitment.

Okay, so as a Marvel fan, I was really paying attention to Danielle Cage-Jones in that scene. She’s clearly set up to be a major player, and it looks like she’s inherited powers from both Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, just like in the comics. The moment that really got me was during the fight outside – while Jessica was taking on the CIA, Danielle was just casually wandering around playing with a live grenade! It was so nonchalant, and then Jessica walks in, takes it, and basically tells her, ‘Hey, not a toy!’ It was a small moment, but it showed so much about her character and potential.

Danielle’s calm reaction after nearly being hit by a grenade is unusual for a mother whose child was in danger, hinting she might have superpowers. This could mean Danielle and her parents will play a role in the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars storyline. Even more surprisingly, we also learn something new about Luke Cage.

Daredevil: Born Again Implies That Luke Cage Worked With Mr. Charles and the CIA

In Season 2 of Born Again, Mr. Charles, played by Matthew Lillard, has become an enemy, despite initially being an ally of Fisk. He was first presented as a CIA agent helping Fisk smuggle weapons through the Red Hook freeport, which was a key location in Season 1. However, after Vanessa’s death, Fisk is severing ties with everyone who might have political influence.

In the episode “Requiem,” Wilson Fisk receives a mysterious, silent phone call from Mr. Charles shortly after he confiscates all of the illegal guns from him. Jessica Jones and Daredevil then raid the facility, successfully destroying the weapons. But before the raid, their conversation hinted at a connection between Mr. Charles and Luke Cage.

The team following Jessica Jones wasn’t involved with Fisk’s task force against vigilantes, but instead worked for a man named Mr. Charles. Jessica investigated and found that Charles had connections with Fisk. However, before working with Fisk, Charles was trying to gather a team of his own, specifically looking for people with abilities similar to Jessica and Matt.

She made it very clear she wasn’t interested, but pointed out that not all of her acquaintances had rejected him. Matt paused after hearing this, simply saying, “Oh.” This suggests Mr. Charles also contacted Luke Cage, and they might have made an agreement, possibly involving the CIA operative.

After Vanessa’s death, Charles goes to the Governor’s residence, offering to help with the issue surrounding Fisk. Given Charles’ past support for Fisk, which may have contributed to his election as mayor, the story could potentially connect with events depicting Kingpin’s time in office.

Once Luke Cage learns the CIA targeted Jessica Jones and his daughter, Charles could face a far more dangerous opponent than the Kingpin. Luke used to be a purely heroic figure, but that might have shifted since the end of his own series.

Luke Cage’s Darker Arc Teased for Season 3 Is Still Ongoing in the MCU

Harlem’s Paradise was a popular nightclub and community hub in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s depiction of Harlem. Initially run by Cottonmouth, and later by Mariah Dillard, it also served as a meeting place for criminal activity. In the final episode of Luke Cage, Mariah left the club to Luke in her will. The series concluded with Luke, wearing a striking yellow suit, taking over as the club’s new owner and sitting at the manager’s desk.

Despite Luke Cage’s intention to use Harlem’s Paradise for good and maintain order in the neighborhood, people worried he might turn to darker methods. Misty Knight made it clear to him that she would stop him if he went too far.

During his last encounter with Jessica Jones, Luke Cage admitted that if he ever turned to villainy, she should stop him and have him imprisoned. According to the show’s creator, Cheo Hodari Coker, this hinted that Luke was heading towards becoming a notorious figure rather than remaining a beloved hero of Harlem.

The Iron Fist TV series took some liberties with the original comic books, but it did establish a friendship between Danny Rand and Luke Cage within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Interestingly, the character Danielle is named in honor of Luke’s friend, Danny. Luke Cage’s new employer is Mr. Charles, though his actual client is the U.S. Government. Photos from the set suggest Luke is still wearing his clothes from Harlem’s Paradise, hinting he may continue to operate in a morally ambiguous area.

Season 3 of Daredevil: Born Again will likely reveal more about these events, but the recent episode, “Requiem,” proved that Luke Cage remains a key player in the story, whether that’s a good thing or not.

New episodes of Daredevil: Born Again are released on Disney+ every Tuesday at 9 PM. You can also now stream the entire Jessica Jones and Luke Cage series.
