Martin Parr’s Cinematic Beach Scenes Front THE SKATEROOM’s Latest Collection

Summary<

  • THE SKATEROOM unveils its collaborative collection with British photographer Martin Parr, one of the final collaborations created with the artist prior to his passing
  • The collection features two limited-edition items: a “Benidorm (Goggles)” single deck and “The Ocean Dome, Miyazaki, Japan, 1996” triptych

Martin Parr has always loved photographing at the beach. He’s said that people are most natural when they’re simply enjoying themselves – sunbathing, swimming, and relaxing. For three decades, he treated beaches as a place to study people, capturing the humorous, strange, and often beautiful contradictions that make us human – and that became the foundation of his work.

THE SKATEROOM is celebrating the work of photographer Stephen Parr with Sunburnt Leisure, Lasting Images. This limited-edition collection, personally approved by Parr before he died last year, reflects his passion for sunshine and the beach.

Two featured artworks are “Benidorm (Goggles),” a detailed, blue-toned image, and the “The Ocean Dome” triptych. Created in Miyazaki, Japan in 1996, the triptych is a particularly powerful example of Parr’s work on the idea of “manufactured escapism.” It shows a large group of people enjoying an indoor wave pool designed to look like a tropical beach, complete with fake palm trees and a blue sky.

Developed with close input from Dave Matthews Band and the artist’s foundation, each item in the collection includes a unique, holographic sticker proving its authenticity. This sticker showcases a portrait of the artist, along with his signature.

THE SKATEROOM explained that partnering with the Martin Parr Foundation wasn’t a choice, but something they felt obligated to do. They wanted to honor Parr’s lively, funny, and insightful work and the impact he had.

A limited-edition skateboard deck called “Benidorm (Goggles)” is available for $149. There’s also a limited run of 100 prints titled “The Ocean Dome, Miyazaki, Japan, 1996” priced at $429. You can find both on the brand’s website.
