Anthropic released Claude Opus 4.8 to users on May 28, 2026, following the release of Opus 4.7 just a few weeks prior in April.
Recent discoveries – including new code, a potential desktop application, and changes to the system’s core – suggest a new version is being released. This update appears to focus on improving the AI’s ability to write and understand code, especially as competition with OpenAI increases.
Claude Opus 4.8 Launches: Anthropic Upgrades AI Flagship
Anthropic launched Claude Opus 4.8 on May 28, 2026, and it performs better than the previous version, Opus 4.7. This release was expected, as details had been shared online beforehand on Reddit.
Despite previous challenges, the updated model is now offered at the same price and includes significant improvements for coding, automated tasks, and giving users more control.
Major Capability Gains
Opus 4.8 performs significantly better in areas like coding, problem-solving, logical thinking, and real-world tasks.
Claude Opus 4.8 is now available! This latest version offers improved reasoning skills, greater transparency about its limitations, and can handle longer, more complex tasks without needing as much guidance. It’s available today at the same cost as Opus 4.7.

Initial testing shows this model is much more dependable, makes better decisions, and is noticeably more truthful. It finds four times more errors in its own code compared to the previous version, Opus 4.7, and is less likely to make statements it can’t back up.
Our evaluations show improvements in how well the model demonstrates helpful and harmless behavior, with a significant decrease in responses that don’t align with these goals, compared to the previous version, Opus 4.7.
New features rolling out today include:
- Effort Control: Users on claude.ai and Cowork can now select how much thinking effort Claude applies — from Low (faster, lower rate-limit usage) to Max. Opus 4.8 defaults to High effort for the best balance of quality and experience.
- Dynamic Workflows in Claude Code: This research preview feature enables Claude to tackle massive tasks by planning, running hundreds of parallel subagents, and verifying outputs. It supports codebase-scale migrations across hundreds of thousands of lines of code.
- Messages API Update: Developers can now insert system instructions mid-conversation without breaking prompt cache.
Pricing and Availability
Standard pricing remains unchanged: $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens.
The new Fast Mode for Opus 4.8 runs 2.5 times faster than normal and costs $10 for a single use or $50 for unlimited access. It’s three times less expensive than our previous fast modes.
You can start using the model right away on claude.ai, through the Claude API (specifically claude-opus-4-8), and on popular cloud platforms.
Anthropic is getting ready to launch more affordable AI models that perform similarly to their current ones. They’ve also finished improving their security measures through a project called Glasswing and will be broadly releasing their new Mythos models in the next few weeks.
As a crypto investor always looking for what’s next, I’m excited to see Opus 4.8 is now available for testing. It looks like businesses and developers can start playing around with it, especially for complicated AI tasks and coding projects. This could be a big step forward for projects building on the network, and I’m eager to see what people create with it.
