What to know:
- Miss Truss opines the U.K. is “growing poorer with alarming speed,” attributing this to burdensome taxes, excessive regulation, and a dearth of incentives for industriousness.
- She condemns inflation and inequality as symptoms of “currency debasement,” lamenting the “singularly ominous” silence surrounding monetary policy.
- Though no longer in office, she now champions bitcoin and organizes CPAC UK to rally the faithful of “sovereignty and liberty.”
Lady Lizzy Truss, whose tenure as Prime Minister was as brief as a summer shower, declared the nation’s economy to be in a state of stagnation, blaming it on the “sad decay of sound money” and the “gradual erosion of sterling’s value” through inflation and excessive printing of notes.
Madam Truss, who held the Treasury’s reins for a mere two years before 2019, confessed a “keen interest” in bitcoin, which she claims may yet serve as a bulwark against currency debasement. Though some might call this a harebrained notion, she insists it was merely a ploy to “stir the pot” during her time at the Treasury.
“The troubles we endure,” she remarked in a recent interview with CoinDesk, “stem largely from the corruption of our currency and the absence of prudent monetary principles.” She further decried the “singularly ominous” neglect of monetary discourse in academia and government, calling it a “most peculiar taboo” despite its vital role in shaping the economy.
For Miss Truss, bitcoin is but one thread in a broader tapestry of resistance against centralization. She warned that the current system fosters “increasingly centralized dominion” over financial independence, particularly through onerous regulation and taxation, and posited bitcoin as a tool to defy such tyranny.
The economy, she declared, is “on a dreadfully negative path,” its long-term decline driven by feeble growth, burgeoning state control, and what she calls a “miserable failure of monetary wisdom.”
“We are growing poorer with alarming speed,” she lamented, citing high taxes, regulation, and energy costs that render “the risk rarely worth the reward” for enterprising souls. “There exists a most disheartening disincentive to labor in this country.”
Reflecting on the tumultuous 2022 mini-budget orchestrated by Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng, she maintained that the resulting chaos merely exposed preexisting flaws, not created them. “There lay a tinderbox in the system, unseen by many,” she mused, blaming leveraged pension strategies for the conflagration.
CPAC UK
Now unshackled from office, Miss Truss dedicates herself to fostering a political movement, including CPAC UK, a three-day gathering of activists and entrepreneurs championing “sovereignty and liberty.” “We require a league of those who comprehend the crisis,” she proclaimed.
Summing up the stakes with characteristic bluntness, she added: “The choice is stark-we perish or we alter course, and I dare say, the latter is preferable.”
