Liam Neeson’s gritty survival thriller will soon be free to watch.
After finding success with the action film Taken in 2008, Liam Neeson became a regular star in the action thriller genre. He’s appeared in films like Run All Night (2015), The Commuter (2018), Cold Pursuit (2019), The Marksman (2021), and Ice Road: Vengeance (2025), and many more. While the quality of these films varies, his 2012 survival movie remains one of his best.
The movie, which was a hit with both critics and viewers 14 years ago, is coming to Tubi. You’ll be able to watch the intense film on the free, ad-supported streaming service starting Friday, May 1st, making it more accessible than ever.
In Joe Carnahan’s film, The Grey, Liam Neeson plays Ottway, an experienced hunter who tries to guide a group of oil workers to safety after a plane crash in the harsh Alaskan wilderness. Their struggle for survival is made even more difficult by a relentless pack of wolves. The film also stars Frank Grillo, Dermot Mulroney, James Badge Dale, Joe Anderson, Dallas Roberts, Nonso Anozie, and Ben Hernandez Bray.
Despite a $25 million budget, The Grey performed well at the box office, earning over $81 million. Critics also liked the film, giving it an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie was celebrated for its suspenseful story, but also for its well-developed characters and thought-provoking themes.
For a Liam Neeson action movie, an 80% rating from critics is really good. To give you some context, his film Taken only scored 60% on Rotten Tomatoes. And even though his newest movie, Cold Storage (released in 2026), isn’t an action film, it’s also been well-received, earning an 81% rating.
While not every Liam Neeson action movie does well in theaters, they consistently attract viewers on streaming platforms. Now that The Grey will be available to watch for free, it’s likely to gain a lot more viewers – either from people rewatching it or discovering it for the first time.
When it first came out, the movie split audiences. The trailers promised a fast-paced action film with Liam Neeson battling wolves, but the actual movie was more thoughtful and grim. Now that it’s available on Tubi, away from that initial marketing, The Grey might be much better received.
