LEGO Star Wars: The origins of Jedi Bob

As a gamer with a heart for LEGO and Star Wars, I must say that the latest miniseries, LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, has truly hit the sweet spot. Jedi Bob, voiced by the hilarious Bobby Moynihan, is a character that resonates deeply with me as a fan who’s been tinkering with LEGO sets since the prequel trilogy era.

Hey there, fellow gamers! Guess who just got their hands on the latest LEGO Star Wars miniseries? That’s right, it’s none other than LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, now streaming on Disney+. This series is packed with the same goofy humor we’ve come to love from these specials. One of the main characters you’ll meet is Jedi Bob, voiced by Bobby Moynihan. Now, this isn’t your average Jedi – his full name is Bobarian Afol. You might not have seen him on screen much before in a galaxy far, far away, but his origins actually trace back to the prequel trilogy, thanks to some creative fans!

Amy Richau from StarWars.com revealed that the character named Bob is modeled after a popular LEGO figure among collectors, an unidentified Jedi Knight from a 2002 LEGO set of an Attack of the Clones Republic Gunship. Since this Jedi didn’t seem to correspond with any of the Jedi present at the Battle of Geonosis, he became something of a puzzle. Over time, fans began calling him “Jedi Bob,” and his story grew in legend. This figure is also mentioned in the book “LEGO Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary.

Additionally, Richau had conversations with both Moynihan and the show’s executive producer, Benji Samit, about the character of Bob in the series titled “Rebuild the Galaxy“.

Longtime Star Wars voice actor, Moynihan, shared that during his recordings, he carried a mini-figure of Bob with him. Having grown up playing with LEGO, he found this role particularly fitting, expressing his delight by stating, “I’m a laid-back Jedi and it’s my dream role. Jedi Bob acknowledges his own lack of prowess in wielding a lightsaber, and I find that endearing. It brings me immense joy to portray a Jedi who may not excel at the skill but possesses all the powers. It makes me chuckle.

Samit couldn’t hide his excitement as he watched fans respond to Jedi Bob when the debut trailer for “Rebuild the Galaxy” was released. “I had a feeling people would be enthusiastic about it. I could sense it in my gut. It’s been incredibly rewarding, validating the LEGO enthusiast within me.

It’s exciting to witness a homemade masterpiece appearing in the LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy miniseries, which consists of four episodes. You can find it streaming on Disney+.
