Legendary Hairspray producer dies aged 49 after brief cancer battle
As a theater enthusiast who has witnessed the magic of Broadway productions, I am deeply saddened by the loss of Adam Epstein. At just 49 years old, his life was cut short by an insidious enemy – cancer. Yet, in those short years, he left an indelible mark on the world of theater that will be felt for generations to come.

At less than 30 years old, Epstein was honored with a Tony Award for his production work on “Hairspray.” Additionally, he garnered recognition through nominations for his contributions to the revival productions of “Amadeus” and “The Crucible.”
I’m sad to share that I received the unfortunate news of my passing on Tuesday, at Adventist Health hospital in Glendale, California.
In a heartfelt post on Facebook, Brett shared that he was announcing, with great sorrow, the passing of his brother.
His brother mentioned that Epstein passed away following a brief but extremely challenging fight against a brain tumor.
In a deeply sorrowful message, Adam Epstein’s brother expressed: ‘With an overwhelming sense of grief and deep regret, I share the heartrending news of the departure from us of my dearest brother and incomparable friend.’
On what should have been my dear friend Adam’s 50th birthday on September 7th, he valiantly fought and endured a heartrendingly brief but excruciating struggle against a malignant brain tumor known as Gliosarcoma. I was deeply saddened by this tragic loss.
I’m deeply shaken, and so is my whole family, following his passing. A significant portion of me perished along with him yesterday, and it’s hard for me to envision a life that continues without him.
As someone who has faced numerous challenges and setbacks throughout my life, I know all too well the importance of perseverance and resilience. In light of this, I must find a way to push forward despite the obstacles that lie ahead. Adam, it is truly an honor for me to call you my brother, not just because we share the same blood, but because our shared experiences and mutual respect have forged a bond that transcends mere familial ties. I am grateful for your unwavering support and friendship throughout the years, and I eagerly anticipate the adventures that lie ahead as we continue to navigate life together.

Parents, even though I’m currently your sole child on this earth, Adam lives on through me, my offspring, and within each of our hearts and memories. Adam, I hold a deep affection for you.
The Hollywood Reporter’s obituary notes that Epstein initially worked as an intern on Broadway, later moving up to become a production assistant.
1998 saw him directing the award-winning re-staging of Arthur Miller’s “A View from the Bridge,” followed by “Amadeus” in 1999, which featured Michael Sheen as its lead actor.
2002 saw him collaborating with Liam Neeson and Laura Linney on the movie “The Crucible”. Following this, he reimagined John Waters’ 1988 film “Hairspray” for the theater, and it turned out to be a huge hit.
In just ten years his productions saw him pick up 12 Tony Awards and 46 nominations.
Jerry Mitchell, a two-time Tony Award-winning choreographer, shared with the media outlet that Adam was the most youthful producer he had ever collaborated with, during their first encounter while working on “Hairspray.”
‘I will always be grateful for his support and encouragement and care for all of us.’
As a child, I dreamt of growing up to become a producer, just like Adam did. Here’s my take on how he achieved that dream and created a successful career in the industry.
‘That’s what gives him such tremendous confidence. He’s always known what he wanted to do.
Adam and I collaborated on two projects: a success, Hairspray, and a disappointment, Cry-Baby. Regardless of their outcomes, Adam’s passion for both performances was unparalleled and he cheered them on like an exceptional team spirit.
Over the past few years, he completed his Master’s Degree in American Studies and kick-started a television career as a political analyst on Fox News. As a progressive voice, he often debated conservative commentators.
Besides him, there remain his mother Bonnie, father Marc, brother Brett, sister Logan, nieces Hazel, Sophie, Lucy, and a nephew named Oliver.
The memorial service will be happening this coming Sunday at the Levitt-Weinstein-Blasberg, Rubin-Zilbert Memorial Chapels located in North Miami Beach. Afterward, the burial will take place at Mount Nebo in Miami.
