Kodak Black, a rapper who was released from prison in 2021 after President Trump reduced his sentence for a firearms conviction, has been arrested in Florida. He’s now facing charges related to alleged drug trafficking.
Rapper Wake Up in the Sky was arrested Wednesday in Florida for allegedly possessing between 10 and 200 grams of MDMA, also known as ecstasy. He doesn’t currently have any concerts planned, according to jail records.
Music
In his first new song since receiving a commutation of his federal prison sentence from President Trump, rapper Kodak Black expresses his pride in his personal growth and accomplishments, saying, “I’m so proud of myself and how far I’ve come.”
I’ve been following this story, and it’s getting interesting. Apparently, Kodak Black’s lawyer, Bradford Cohen, finally spoke to TMZ about the recent arrest. He said it wasn’t a typical arrest at all – it was actually a planned surrender. It all goes back to a search of someone else’s car in November 2025. Police found prescription cough syrup, and they said Kodak’s fingerprints were on the bottle. So, it seems like things have been building for a while, and his lawyer is painting this as a pre-arranged situation.
The attorney said they expect to successfully resolve the case, adding that it shouldn’t have been brought to court in the first place.
Online records indicated Kapri was being held without bond.
I’ve been following this rapper’s story, and it’s been pretty wild. Back in January 2021, he released a song hinting at his upcoming release from prison, basically saying he was ready for a better life – sushi instead of prison food, protecting his family, and even making a playful comment about Trump. But since then, he’s had a lot of run-ins with the law, which is a shame because his song really showed a hopeful side, even acknowledging the prejudice he’s faced.
Kapri was released after serving nearly four years in prison for falsifying information on gun purchase background checks in 2019. He was also serving a one-year sentence for possessing a firearm at the same time. On his last day in office, President Trump also pardoned rapper Lil Wayne and Steve Bannon, a former advisor.
Entertainment & Arts
I just heard that Kodak Black, while dealing with those legal issues in Florida – you know, the drug possession and trafficking charges – has to start a month of rehab next week. Hopefully, this will help him get back on track.
After originally being accused of assaulting a teenage girl in a South Carolina hotel room in 2016, Kapri later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree assault. He received an 18-month probation sentence for the incident, which occurred after a concert, and a 10-year prison sentence was not served.
In July 2022, Florida Highway Patrol stopped Kapri for having overly dark window tints on his SUV. After reportedly smelling marijuana, officers searched the vehicle and found a bag containing 31 oxycodone pills and nearly $75,000 in cash. The charges related to this incident are still being processed.
According to Cohen, his client received a prescription for pain pills from a doctor following a shooting incident. This happened in Los Angeles in 2022, after a party following a Justin Bieber concert during Super Bowl weekend, where his client was shot in the foot.
In March 2023, Kapri was required to enter a month-long rehabilitation program after testing positive for fentanyl. This happened while he was awaiting trial for charges from 2022.
In December 2023, police found Kapri asleep in his Bentley. A search revealed a white, powdery substance on him, which they believed to be cocaine.
In April 2024, the Miami Herald reported that a Florida man, initially arrested in Plantation for suspected cocaine possession, only received a parking ticket. The drug charges were dropped after tests revealed the substance was actually ground-up Oxycontin, a medication he had a prescription for.
Earlier this year, Kapri was held at the Miami Federal Detention Center for two months because he violated his probation related to a 2019 weapons case where his sentence was reduced.
