Joker 2’s Todd Phillips explains cutting Lady Gaga same-sex kiss scene
As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Todd Phillips’ decision to cut the same-sex kiss scene between Lady Gaga and another woman in Joker: Folie à Deux was a bit of a letdown. While I understand his reasoning for wanting to focus on the music and vibe moment, it would have added a refreshing twist to the film’s narrative.
Joker: Folie à Deux spoilers follow.
Director Todd Phillips, of the film “Joker: Folie à Deux,” has disclosed his reasons for eliminating a same-sex kiss scene featuring Lady Gaga.
During the movie’s production, Harleen ‘Lee’ Quinzel was seen hugging a woman in the crowd outside the courtroom, but this scene wasn’t included in the final version of the film.
In a candid disclosure, Phillips explained that the scene, featuring Lee’s ascent up the stairs accompanied by a song and dance, would have disrupted the emotional impact they intended.
He shared with Entertainment Weekly that it initially contained dialogue, but then he found himself wishing for it to transition into a moment filled with music and ambiance instead.
To make that scene effective, it required dialogues as a backdrop. In other words, the woman spoke, and then Gaga reacted, which seemed to disrupt the intended impact of the moment.
Phillips also said that the kiss moment was improvised by Gaga.
Some viewers have mentioned they were expecting to see a scene where the Joker and Lee dance on the stairs in the final film, but director Phillips has not yet commented on why this moment was left out from the trailer or the movie itself.
After debuting last week, the sequel to “Joker” has unfortunately broken an undesirable box office record by receiving a D grade from CinemaScore, which is the lowest rating ever given to a comic book film. Additionally, it brought in $40 million within the U.S., and $81 million overseas.
It’s been announced that Phillips has dismissed the possibility of a third Joker film or a Harley Quinn spin-off featuring Lady Gaga.
He shared with The Hollywood Reporter that the direction of this movie doesn’t resonate with him. He feels his association with the DC Universe has been limited to just those two movies.
Joker: Folie à Deux is out now in cinemas. Joker is available to buy on Blu-ray or streaming now.
