Jeff Shell to step down as Paramount president after legal battle with gambler

Jeff Shell, the president of Paramount, is likely to leave the company following a dispute involving a well-known gambler and someone who claims to resolve problems for others.

According to two sources with knowledge of the situation, Shell is preparing to step down after only eight months as the company’s leader. An official announcement is expected soon, but the sources weren’t permitted to discuss the matter publicly.

The experienced entertainment leader formally started with the media company when David Ellison took control in August, but he’d been working closely with Ellison’s team for almost two years as they built up his media business. In late February, Ellison’s Skydance Media successfully completed a remarkable $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery after first acquiring Paramount.

Shell joined Ellison’s team bringing valuable experience from leading a media company – a background not shared by many others in the group, which primarily consisted of investment bankers and individuals without experience running a major business. She was also on the Paramount board and will likely be stepping down from that position as well.

Robert James “R.J.” Cipriani, a prominent figure in crisis communications, recently left his position after filing a lawsuit against Shell on March 9th. In the lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Cipriani alleges Shell committed fraud and broke a verbal agreement. He claims he provided Shell with valuable crisis communication services, but they leaked confidential information – a claim Shell disputes. Additionally, Cipriani asserts Shell didn’t follow through on a promise to assist him in creating an English-language version of a Spanish music show for Roku TV.

According to Shell, Cipriani fabricated details about their business interactions and then publicly shared untrue and scandalous stories to try and get a large sum of money. Cipriani is suing for $150 million, but Shell argues they only met twice and don’t owe him anything, and has therefore filed a countersuit.

How top Paramount executive’s ties with Vegas gambler unraveled

Jeff Shell’s position at Paramount Skydance is at risk due to secret interactions with a prominent, high-rolling gambler in Las Vegas, especially as the company pursues a merger with Warner Bros. Discovery.

A legal dispute created problems for Shell’s position at the company, as the Ellisons prioritized completing their acquisition of Warner Bros. and securing necessary regulatory approvals both in the United States and internationally. According to sources, this situation, along with the Cipriani controversy, made it impossible for Shell to continue in their role at Paramount.

Shell’s departure comes three years after he was ousted as NBCUniversal chief executive.

Comcast, the parent company of NBCUniversal, launched an investigation after a CNBC anchor internally reported sexual harassment. Andy Shell resigned from his position, admitting to having an “inappropriate relationship” with the journalist, who no longer works at the company.

The job at Paramount was envisioned to be his second act.

Shell and Cipriani first met in August 2024 at the Century City office of lawyer Patty Glaser. Glaser was representing both of them at the time and advised Cipriani to stop trying to find negative information about Shell, who was working to rebuild his reputation after losing his job at NBC.

I was really struck by one of the claims Cipriani made – he said he reported to the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission that Shell had shared some incredibly confidential details about Paramount with him. Specifically, it involved Paramount’s potential $7.7 billion deal to bring UFC fights to CBS and their other networks. Shell, though, has strongly denied ever doing that in their legal response.

R.J. Cipriani is suing Jeff Shell, claiming Shell went back on a verbal promise to create an English-language adaptation of a Spanish music program. Cipriani alleges fraud and other related claims.

Paramount asked the law firm Gibson Dunn to look into hidden communications between Shell and Cipriani. The investigation is focused on whether Shell shared any confidential information, and it’s still ongoing.

I’m really curious to see what Shari Redstone and Byron Ellison will do after they take over Warner Bros. Discovery. I wonder if they’ll hire new, experienced leaders from outside the company, or if they’ll promote people who are already working at Warner Bros. Discovery to fill key roles.
