Mad Cave Studios’ new Flash Gordon #0 comic introduces a story where the legendary Flash Gordon, known for his rebellious spirit both on Earth and in space, takes on a new role: training the next wave of space explorers. What starts as a simple training exercise around Neptune’s moons quickly turns dangerous when the cadets encounter hostile aliens. One eager recruit believes they can handle the situation without Gordon’s help, leading to a thrilling adventure.
Who Is Flash Gordon?
Flash Gordon, the hero created by Alex Raymond, first appeared in 1934 in the King Features comic strip that shared his name. Originally, Flash was portrayed as a Yale graduate and polo player who, along with his companion and love interest Dale Arden, was kidnapped and taken to the planet Mongo. Their mission? To stop the villainous Ming the Merciless.
The original Flash Gordon comic strip quickly became a huge hit, running daily for over forty years and as a Sunday strip for almost seventy. Though Flash Gordon has been revived since then, it’s just one of many times the character has been updated and reimagined.
For nearly a century, Flash Gordon has appeared in comic books published by various companies, including David McKay, Gold Key, Charlton, and Marvel. Starting in 2011, the character experienced a particularly popular run, and more recently, Mad Cave Studios’ Flash Gordon series, launched in 2023, has quickly become another hit with fans.
Buster Crabbe first popularized Flash Gordon in the late 1930s with a series of movie shorts, solidifying the character’s place in popular culture. Then, in 1980, a live-action movie starring Sam Jones as Flash Gordon became the most well-known version of the story.
Okay, so I’ve been super hyped for a new Flash Gordon movie, and for years we’ve all been waiting to hear more about the one Taika Waititi was supposed to be making. A while back, in 2021, we heard it was switching from animation to a live-action film, and that Taika was still writing it. But honestly, that’s the last real update we’ve gotten – it’s been radio silence since then, and I’m starting to wonder if it’ll ever actually happen!
Flash Gordon #0 from Mad Cave Studios goes on sale April 8.
