Japan is likely to soon approve its first Bitcoin ETF. Financial regulators are also planning significant changes to crypto investment rules, potentially allowing for more regulated digital asset products by 2028.

Japan’s Financial Services Agency is planning updates to rules governing investment funds. This follows new laws that shift the regulation of immediate cryptocurrency purchases – known as ‘spot’ trading – from payment service regulations to those covering more traditional investments like stocks and bonds. Essentially, this means crypto assets will now be regulated in a similar way to conventional financial products.

A diversification tool

From my analysis, it looks like Japan is moving forward with approving cryptocurrency ETFs. As reported by U.Today, Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama recently indicated the government is on schedule for legalization, largely because we’re seeing these types of products perform well in other countries.

Major investment firms are looking into starting Bitcoin ETFs in Japan, which experts believe could bring in as much as 3 trillion yen over the next few years.

More Japanese investors are starting to see cryptocurrencies as a way to spread out their investments. Aiyu Kiguchi, who leads investment management at the National Business Pension Fund in Okayama, explained that their fund invested in crypto funds run by international hedge funds because crypto prices don’t tend to move with the US dollar, making it a good way to diversify.

The pension fund, responsible for 21.5 billion yen in assets belonging to about 1,200 small and medium-sized companies, has begun investing in cryptocurrencies. This initial investment makes up 1% of the fund’s total holdings and is part of a plan to spread investments across different asset types.

Several large Japanese financial companies are preparing for the possibility of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency ETFs. In May, SBI Holdings suggested creating ETFs that would invest in cryptocurrencies, including one that combines Bitcoin and XRP.

State Bank of India aims to manage approximately 5 trillion yen in assets over the next three years.

If given the green light, Japan’s first Bitcoin ETF would be a major development for the country’s crypto investors and enthusiasts.
