How to Track Monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds

Exploring and hunting monsters in their native environments has been a core aspect of the Monster Hunter series, and this continues in Monster Hunter Wilds. Throughout the primary narrative, players are led through the monster tracking procedure, but it’s not initially clear what steps to take once the initial hunt is complete.

As a dedicated hunter, I’ve come to realize that acquiring new weapons and armor necessitates a substantial amount of monster parts, not all of which can be gathered during a single pursuit in the Low Rank. To ensure a swift and efficient hunt, here’s a guide on how to effectively track monsters down for those valuable parts.

How to Track Monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds

In Monster Hunter Wilds, they’ve blended the leisurely and strategic tracking from Monster Hunter World with the quicker, mission-oriented hunting style from Monster Hunter Rise. Here’s how it operates: After you physically follow a monster just once, it will be automatically tracked within the open world.

When you embark on your initial monster-hunting adventure, you’ll follow the narrative quests to locate and track the mysterious creature. During these quests, you’ll gather hints about its whereabouts by examining key locations marked by green scoutflies. These tracks will eventually lead you to the monster’s habitat. Throughout this process, members of the Hunter’s Guild may accompany you, offering guidance as you progress.

Once you’ve completed the primary mission involving the monster and successfully hunted it down, you can now engage with Field Studies/Optional Missions featuring that creature. Fortunately, players no longer have to manually search for the monster again. Instead, they can either consult their map or converse with Alma to learn its current whereabouts. There are three methods to accomplish this:

  1. Field Survey
  2. Optional Quest
  3. Set Waypoint

Field Survey

Locate the map and find the monster you wish to battle, specifically in the region it’s usually spotted. If the monster is active, a moving marker symbolizing its position will appear on the map. Tap the monster marker and access the details menu. In this menu, opt for ‘Field Survey’. This action triggers a quest from the game to capture that monster. A waypoint gets automatically set for the monster, with scoutflies serving as your navigation system to its location. Hop on your Seikret and let it auto-run towards your objective.

If there’s a Quick Teleport location, such as a Temporary Camp, nearby, it would likely be quicker for you to teleport there initially.

Optional Quest

Speak with Alma, the Quest Counter, in the base camp to initiate Optional Quests. These are quests that allow you to track down monsters you’ve previously encountered during the main storyline. To access them, choose ‘Post/Join Quests’ and then select ‘Optional Quests’. This will display all the available creatures for your current level, their required Hunter Level, along with any potential rewards or drops if you successfully hunt them.

In contrast to Field Surveys, this function operates in much the same manner, yet provides an added ease as it eliminates the need for constant monitoring of the map for potential monsters.

In optional quests or field surveys, utilizing Lucky Vouchers at their beginning could boost the quantity of rewards you receive and enhance the likelihood of item drops.

Set Waypoint

Additionally, you have the option to mark a location for a monster you spot on your map using the designated Set Waypoint shortcut key. If you’ve previously encountered and engaged this monster in combat, initiating an Optional Quest or Field Survey will automatically become available once you inflict a specific level of damage upon it.

If you haven’t encountered or been authorized by the Hunter’s Guild to battle this creature before, no mission relating to it will appear. Instead, a message will flash up alerting you of this fact. While you can still slay the monster and collect its remains for materials, you won’t be granted any rewards associated with the quest.

Large monsters respawn every 3 hours.
