Hollywood icon Shirley MacLaine, 91, makes rare outing as she is assisted by aide during lunch in Malibu

Hollywood legend Shirley MacLaine was pictured enjoying a sunny outing in Malibu over the weekend.

91-year-old actress Shirley MacLaine, known for her role in Terms of Endearment, was spotted enjoying a rare outing for lunch on Saturday, just before her birthday on April 24th.

The Academy Award-winning actress needed help walking as she left a restaurant in Malibu, and relied on an assistant for support.

As someone who really believes style should feel good, I loved MacLaine’s recent look! She kept things super comfy and relaxed in a cozy brown cardigan, paired with a matching tee and grey sweatpants. It’s proof you don’t have to sacrifice comfort for style – sometimes, the most effortless looks are the best!

She was previously seen in January while having a bite to eat at celebrity hotspot Nobu.

The actress, older sister to Warren Beatty, has lived a relatively private life in recent years, staying away from the public spotlight.

Shirley MacLaine has often shared what she believes keeps her healthy and active for so long, pointing to her lifelong dedication to dance, which started when she was only three.

She began dancing at age three and continued until she was 67. She’s said that it instilled in her discipline, a love for music, the ability to collaborate, and resilience in the face of discomfort. Despite her age, the seasoned performer has no plans to retire completely.

Shirley MacLaine recently shared how thankful she is for her good health, close friends, and the chance to continue working even in her nineties.

Shirley MacLaine doesn’t appear in public often these days, but she still lives a low-key life in Malibu. When she’s not at her New Mexico ranch, people often see her around town.

Shirley began her impressive film career in 1955, landing a prominent role in Alfred Hitchcock’s dark comedy, The Trouble With Harry. However, she was already well-known as a stage performer, having appeared in Broadway hits like Oklahoma! and The Pajama Game.

In a 2017 interview with W Magazine, she described herself as a newcomer who felt lost and inexperienced, like a small, insignificant member of a larger group.

She eventually realized Hitchcock prioritized finding actors who naturally fit the roles over directing their performances, but this actually benefited her – she was a natural fit for the character.

She starred in several popular and critically acclaimed films in the 1950s and 60s, like ‘Some Came Running,’ ‘Ask Any Girl,’ ‘The Apartment,’ and ‘The Children’s Hour.’ However, she didn’t receive an Academy Award until the 1980s, when she won Best Actress for her role in the heartwarming film ‘Terms of Endearment’ (1983), alongside Debra Winger and Jack Nicholson.

The movie was a critical success, winning Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor (awarded to Jack Nicholson). She continued to appear in popular films like Bewitched (2005), Bernie (2011), and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013).

Shirley doesn’t work as quickly as she used to, but she still appears in around one movie or television show each year.

She recently appeared in two episodes of the popular comedy series Only Murders In The Building in 2022. She also starred alongside Peter Dinklage in the film American Dreamers, which first premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2022 and was released in 2025.

In a 2024 interview with Extra, Shirley shared her unexpected plans for turning 90: she’ll be working on a new project on a film set in Atlantic City instead of having a large party.

Honestly, seeing her still working after almost seventy years just blows my mind! She’s a total legend. But she’s said herself that Hollywood isn’t what it once was, and it’s just…sad to hear, even though she’s still amazing. It’s like things have changed so much, and it’s not the same magic anymore, you know?

She told Extra that Hollywood just isn’t as exciting as it used to be, largely due to the growing popularity of streaming services. She feels it’s become a completely different world now.
