HBO’s New 8-Part Sci-Fi Western Will Be ‘True Detective Meets Watchmen’

HBO is developing a new science fiction western series that’s generating buzz for its unique approach. The show aims to combine the gritty atmosphere of True Detective with the complex world-building of Watchmen. However, it’s challenging for any comic book adaptation to gain attention in today’s crowded streaming market. With decades of Marvel movies already released, and shows like Invincible and The Boys leading the way on Prime Video, many mature and unconventional superhero stories have already explored and redefined the genre’s typical themes.

Since the success of 2016’s Deadpool, which showed that R-rated superhero content could appeal to a wide audience and earn critical praise, films like Deadpool 2, Logan, Joker, and Deadpool & Wolverine have continued to demonstrate this. On television, shows such as Legion, The Punisher, Harley Quinn, Titans, The Boys, Invincible, 2019’s Watchmen, The Boys Presents: Diabolical, Gen V, and The Penguin have all proven that a dark and intense superhero show isn’t a new idea by 2026.

Okay, so I’m really excited about HBO’s new detective series, Lanterns. It’s got a lot to live up to, honestly, since it’s the third show in this new DC Universe after Creature Commandos and Peacemaker. What’s cool is it’s focusing on two Green Lanterns – John Stewart and Hal Jordan. Kyle Chandler is playing Jordan, which is awesome, and Aaron Pierre, who I loved in Rebel Ridge, is taking on Stewart. The story seems like a really interesting take – they’re teaming up to investigate a murder right here on Earth, and I’m hoping it feels fresh and different from what we’ve seen before.

HBO’s Lanterns Will Be A Cross Between True Detective And Watchmen

Despite being based on the intergalactic hero Green Lantern, the upcoming TV show won’t be a lighthearted, over-the-top adventure with lots of aliens and space travel. It’s shaping up to be a dark and realistic detective series, much more similar to True Detective than typical superhero shows like DC Super Hero Girls. The involvement of screenwriter Damon Lindelof, known for his gritty 2019 reboot of Watchmen, further suggests this series will be serious and avoid campiness, even more so than the earlier DC show Titans.

As a big fan of thoughtful TV, I was really shaken up by Maureen Ryan’s book, Burn It Down, which came out last year. It detailed some serious accusations against Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse – specifically, that they fostered a racist and really difficult work environment on Lost, and Harold Perrineau’s claims were backed up by a lot of the writers. So, it’s… complicated, to say the least, that Lindelof is now doing a new HBO series, Lanterns, with a former CIA officer, Tom King. Knowing his work on Watchmen, I’m bracing myself for another dark and gritty show. I’m excited to see Lanterns, but I’m also going in with a lot of mixed feelings.

How Lanterns Will Be Different From Other DCU Projects

HBO’s new series, Lanterns, is intended to be a dark and serious crime drama, taking inspiration from shows like True Detective and Slow Horses. Unlike the often-criticized 2011 Green Lantern movie, Lanterns promises a gritty and realistic tone. Both stars, Chandler and Pierre, are known for their roles in similarly dramatic projects – Friday Night Lights and The Underground Railroad – suggesting this will be a mature and compelling show.

The upcoming Lanterns series might be exactly what the DC Universe needs. While Peacekeeper was quite violent, it was also entertaining and funny, and James Gunn’s Superman movie worked well because it kept the positive, lighthearted feel of the original comics. Gunn’s DCU has generally been either very cheerful or dark but still enjoyable, so Lanterns could stand out by offering a different mood with its Neo-Western story. Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see how the series’ mix of True Detective and Watchmen influences works when it arrives later this year.
