So, everyone’s hyped for the Halo: Combat Evolved remake coming out later this year, but it looks like 343 isn’t stopping there! A recent leak is giving us a first glimpse of what Halo 7 might actually be like, and honestly, it’s getting me super excited to see where they’re taking Master Chief next.
Halo Studios is planning a new project, currently known as “Halo Next,” which will be their biggest release since 2021’s Halo Infinite. Since then, the studio has gone through layoffs and reorganization, and they’ve stopped actively developing and adding new content to Halo Infinite’s online multiplayer mode.
This week, Halo reporter Rebs Gaming released a YouTube video detailing rumored plans for the next Halo game. He followed up on a previous video discussing the development of a Halo Infinite sequel before the recent layoffs. According to Rebs Gaming, the original director, Joe Staten, intended to build upon the Halo universe with new ideas, rather than revisiting the Flood. The plan was to further explore the Endless, the advanced alien species first introduced in Halo Infinite.
The most surprising detail from Rebs Gaming’s report is that the game was referred to as “Campaign Next” during development. Although this might not seem like much, it connects with a recent job posting for a Narrative Design Director on a project called “Halo Next.” This suggests that a new, major Halo game is in the works, potentially using ideas originally planned for “Campaign Next.”
The future of the Halo series isn’t entirely clear, as recent installments have often split fans. While Halo Infinite’s gameplay was well-received, its story didn’t resonate with many. Continuing the story with the Endless could be a good way to explore new concepts, but some fans are hoping for a return to the classic conflict with the Flood.
How well the remake of Halo: Combat Evolved is received will likely be a key indicator of where the Halo franchise is headed. The developers, Halo Studios, are switching to Unreal Engine 5 and experimenting with generative AI during the game’s creation – changes we can expect to see continue in Halo 7. Perhaps most notably, this version of Halo is also coming to PlayStation 5, marking the first time a main Halo game has ever been released on a competing console.
