Gregg Wallace is relocating to Italy after having to sell his large one-million-pound home in Kent. This decision came after the BBC decided not to renew his contract.
John Torode, the 61-year-old former host of MasterChef, was fired by the broadcaster last July following an investigation into claims of inappropriate behavior at work. The investigation looked into 83 historical allegations, and 45 of those were confirmed.
Gregg filed a lawsuit against the BBC and BBC Studios Distribution Limited, seeking up to £10,000 in damages. He claimed they didn’t share his personal data properly, causing him distress and harassment, but he later withdrew the claim in February.
The former broadcaster announced on Instagram Monday that he’s starting a ‘new chapter’ by leaving the UK with his family to travel through Italy.
Gregg further announced his plan to homeschool his young son – who is autistic and non-verbal.
Besides buying a place in Italy, Gregg is also planning to purchase a smaller, more affordable house in Yorkshire, near where his daughter lives.
In a recent social media video, he announced that they’re cleaning out their house and preparing to sell it.
We’re planning to purchase a smaller home in Yorkshire, near where our daughter lives, and then spend half of each year in Italy.
My wife is Italian, and I’ve always been fascinated by Italy. We’re planning an adventurous move where we’ll travel around and rent places as we go. I’m also going to homeschool our son, Sid, with support from friends who specialize in autism.
We’re starting a new and exciting phase of our lives, filled with travel and adventure, and I can’t wait!
This news follows Gregg’s recent announcement that he’s selling his million-pound home in Kent, explaining he can no longer maintain his previous lifestyle.
The former BBC personality is planning to sell their large home, which includes five acres of land, stables, and a pond.
Gregg, who purchased the house in 2017, is moving to simplify his life and provide financial stability for his wife, Anne-Marie (38), and their six-year-old son, Sid, who is autistic.
He admitted his life had changed permanently, but explained he was already wanting to move on from his old ways, though not through such a difficult and public experience.
I’m looking to slow down and enjoy life more, but I also need to make sure my family is financially secure. I have a young wife and a son, Sid, who has special needs, so providing for them is a priority.
He continued, explaining he wanted to both enjoy some downtime and secure his family’s future. He acknowledged that balancing those goals wouldn’t be simple.
I’m planning to downsize from this large house to something smaller. This will allow me to work less and hopefully spend about six months of the year in Italy, creating memorable experiences for my family – we all adore it there.
This news follows Gregg’s announcement that he’s training to become an autism coach, after dropping his lawsuit against the BBC.
Gregg is dedicating his time to helping people with autism live independently, motivated by his son Sid, who is nonverbal and on the autism spectrum.
This is just the newest of several online businesses for the former presenter. They’ve also made money by creating custom video messages and sponsored content, including recent promotions for a line of ceramic non-stick pans.
In a January Substack post, he argued that the investigation wasn’t conducted according to legal standards and wouldn’t hold up in court. He described it as more similar to a typical internal HR review.
He claimed that after his reputation was already suffering, a public request was made for anyone who had previously worked with or met him to share their experiences.
Gregg Wallace, who worked alongside John Torode on MasterChef for almost two decades, explained that he’s met a huge number of people throughout his career. This included not only the six new contestants each day of filming, but also numerous crew members, fellow TV personalities, and people at charity events and parties.
He explained that if everyone with a problem, negative feeling, or even a faulty memory was allowed to investigate your life, do you think you’d be able to withstand it without anyone filing a complaint?
He stated that almost all of the 45 complaints that were proven valid happened before 2018, the year he received an official warning regarding his use of language.
The initial hearing for his £10,000 damages claim was cancelled just before it was scheduled for February 16th. A BBC representative later stated that Wallace had withdrawn the claim.
They said: ‘Shortly in advance of a hearing, due February 16, Gregg discontinued his claim.
‘He is not receiving any payment in costs or damages from either BBC or BBC Studios.’
Gregg started co-hosting MasterChef in 2005. However, in November 2024, it was announced he would temporarily leave the show while investigations took place regarding allegations of misconduct.
An investigation by the law firm Lewis Silkin confirmed 45 out of 83 claims made against him. These incidents, which largely took place between 2005 and 2018, included one instance of inappropriate touching.
The investigation found that most of the confirmed complaints against Mr. Wallace involved inappropriate sexual jokes and comments. A few other complaints about generally inappropriate language and being improperly dressed were also confirmed.
Gregg apologized, saying he was truly sorry if he caused anyone upset and that he never intended to hurt or embarrass anyone.
