George R.R. Martin wants Guillermo del Toro to adapt his vampire novel Fevre Dream (Exclusive)
As a lifelong fan of George R.R. Martin’s works, I can confidently say that he has a knack for weaving intricate stories that captivate readers and viewers alike. His latest revelation about wanting to adapt his novel “Fevre Dream” into a film is music to my ears.
George R.R. Martin is primarily recognized for penning “A Song of Ice and Fire,” a vast fantasy series that was transformed into the sensational TV show “Game of Thrones” by HBO, but he has also written numerous other works throughout his career. His writing journey dates back to the 1970s, where he initially gained recognition for crafting short stories and novels across various genres like science fiction, fantasy, and horror. At that time, he hadn’t yet developed the world of Westeros; thus, he has a rich collection of tales set in diverse locations, ranging from the frigid expanse of space to bizarre alien planets and even historical eras on our own Earth. If Martin’s plans materialize, we can expect more of these non-Westeros stories to be brought to life on the big screen in the upcoming years.
Last month we had the absolute honor of interviewing Martin in Glasgow, Scotland, where he was attending this year’s World Science Fiction Convention. Soon, we’ll be publishing our entire conversation, but throughout the coming week we’ll be sharing previews to give you a glimpse of what’s in store.
One curiosity we expressed towards Martin was which among his works set outside Westeros he’d be most eager to see brought to life on screen with a budget similar to Game of Thrones or its prequel, House of the Dragon.. To our surprise, it seemed that he had given this question considerable thought.
Without a moment’s pause, he replied, ‘I adore ‘Fevre Dream.’ I’ve had many discussions about it and even penned a screenplay for it. At one time, we worked on its development, but the film adaptation wasn’t produced. However, the rights returned to me, so now I hold them.’
Fevre Dream,” penned by George R.R. Martin in 1982, remains one of his most outstanding works outside the Westeros series, according to many readers. This captivating vampire tale unfolds along the Mississippi River during the mid-1800s, showcasing Martin’s exceptional talent for horror writing. The narrative revolves around Abner Marsh, a weathered and hard-luck steamboat captain, who is hired by the enigmatic Joshua York to navigate the river as part of an obscure mission. However, unbeknownst to Marsh, he becomes entangled in a broader world of vampiric power struggles, filled with unexpected twists and turns that would resonate deeply with fans of “A Song of Ice and Fire.
GRRM has met with Guillermo del Toro about adapting Fevre Dream
Martin has already discussed directing a movie adaptation of “Fevre Dream” with Guillermo del Toro. As the author shared, “I’ve had discussions about Fevre Dream with Guillermo del Toro,” he said. “He’s fond of it, he expresses his desire to make it…but not right now. He always has one project after another, and then another. However, if he, Martin, and movies continue to exist for that long, I believe Fevre Dream would be fantastic.
It’s likely that Guillermo del Toro would excel at directing a film adaptation of “Fevre Dream”. With his extensive experience in filmmaking and a track record of imaginative works such as “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “The Shape of Water”, which have earned him critical acclaim and multiple awards, it seems that his unique style would be perfect for the dark and dramatic horror genre that characterizes “Fevre Dream”. However, it’s not just del Toro who Martin envisions for this project; there are other talented individuals he has in mind as well.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve got the perfect candidate for our game’s protagonist – none other than my buddy, Ron Perlman! He’s shown interest in playing Abner Marsh. The buzz around him taking up this role is electric, and if we can secure $100 million, everyone involved is on board to make it happen!
George R.R. Martin wants Ron Perlman to play Abner Marsh in a Fevre Dream movie
Previously, Ron Perlman and this individual named Martin collaborated, specifically during the late-1980s when Ron Perlman was acting in the CBS television show titled “Beauty and the Beast.” Linda Hamilton from “The Terminator” played opposite him in this series. During this time, Martin functioned as a writer for the show, eventually progressing to the role of co-supervising producer until its conclusion in 1990. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2017, Martin shared his sentiments about working with Ron Perlman, stating that it was one of the highlights of his life and that he found it a sheer pleasure to write for him.
It’s interesting to note that Del Toro has collaborated with Perlman, who portrayed the lead role in both of Del Toro’s Hellboy films. This seems like a perfect fit for Fevre Dream.
With his towering physicality and gruff demeanor, it’s very easy for me to picture Ron Perlman making a great Abner Marsh. Here’s hoping that one day we get to see it. In the meantime, George R.R. Martin’s novel Fevre Dream is widely available and very much worth a read, so if you’re curious you can check it out.
Keep an eye out for Winter Is Coming’s extensive interview with George R.R. Martin, which will be published shortly. We’ll be offering sneak peeks in the coming days, so don’t forget to visit us frequently this week!
