George Michael’s life is reportedly set to be turned into a Broadway musical.
Yioda Panayiotou, the 64-year-old sister of the late singer, reportedly met with producers privately to discuss the project.
The show is expected to feature many of George Michael’s popular songs, telling the story of his journey to stardom with Wham! and his later success as a solo artist.
According to a source speaking to The Sun, George’s family has consistently turned down numerous lucrative offers for films or plays about his life story.
However, lately Yioda has become more open to the idea, particularly because this year is the tenth anniversary of her brother’s death.
Currently, the project is in its initial phases, but the idea is to create a biographical account of George’s life and work, featuring some of his most popular songs.
The show is currently being developed in New York, and Maria Friedman, a highly acclaimed director with seven Olivier Award nominations, is set to direct.
The creators are hoping this musical will be as popular as shows like Hamilton and eventually be performed in London’s West End.
George, born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, passed away in 2016 at the age of 53, likely due to heart problems.
The duo Wham!, consisting of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, rose to prominence in 1983 with their first album, Fantastic.
They sold more than 30 million records worldwide and turned out hits such as Wake Me Up Before You Go Go, Club Tropicana and Last Christmas.
George and his partner met in school in Hertfordshire, but they separated on good terms when George began a successful solo music career, selling more than 100 million records.
His final performance was on October 2012 in Earl’s Court, London.
Andrew had previously mentioned the singer didn’t perform at their peak in their later years, and suggested several things contributed to this decline.
It was just heartbreaking to hear about his passing. As a long-time admirer, I, like so many of his friends, am truly saddened that we won’t have the chance to enjoy his presence and company anymore. It feels like a huge loss, especially at this point in all our lives.
He didn’t have the easiest time in his later years, and many things contributed to that. But even then, whenever we spent time together, it still felt just like old times.
We still enjoyed being together and found each other funny – none of that had changed.
