Fortnite patch notes for August 20: Changes to weapons and more
As a die-hard Fortnite fan with countless hours clocked in since its launch, I must admit that the August 20 update has brought a breath of fresh air to the game. The adjustments made to weapons like the Sovereign Shotgun and Captain America’s Shield have been long overdue, making the battlefield a tad more balanced for us plebs who aren’t superheroes (or at least not in-game).
Find out which weapons and Mythics have changed in today’s update.
In just a few days since Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 4 launched, Epic Games has already rolled out some significant updates, responding to player feedback. An update on August 20th particularly focused on modifying a set of three weapons, two of which are uniquely tied to the Marvel-themed items introduced this season: War Machine’s Arsenal and Captain America’s Shield. Here’s a rundown of the changes detailed in the August 20 Fortnite update patch notes.
Fortnite patch notes for the August 20 update
- Sovereign Shotgun aims down sights more quickly and fires faster while doing so.
- Captain America’s Shield does slightly less damage, will require more accuracy to ‘hone’ in on an enemy, and Staggers more quickly when blocking damage.
- War Machine’s Arsenal Rockets deal slightly less damage to structures and take longer to reload.

Initially, the update for Fortnite reveals that the recently added Sovereign Shotgun has been improved in terms of its aim down sight (ADS) functionality. The enhancements involve both the speed at which you can ADS and the rate at which the weapon fires. Earlier, numerous players perceived the new Shotgun as weaker compared to the Gatekeeper. This modification should make it somewhat more useful.
Following up is Captain America’s Shield, a weapon that left many questioning its power level this season. Critics argued that the difficulty in opposing this weapon led Epic Games to make adjustments. Now, Captain America’s Shield inflicts less damage and isn’t thrown as effortlessly. Additionally, opponents attacking Shield users will stagger them more quickly, leaving these users in a more exposed position.
In summary, the Mythic War Machine’s Arsenal Rockets now cause less destruction to buildings and take longer to reload. Previously, players could manipulate this feature by attacking enemies who were hiding within structures. However, it is no longer as straightforward to exploit this aspect of the weapon.
Competitive Fortnite tournaments lose Shockwave Grenades (Battle Royale only) and War Machine’s Arsenal
Even though avid Fortnite players are excited about the upcoming departure of the Jetpack during Chapter 5 Season 4, they’ll have to wait as Epic Games has taken out the Mythic item from tournaments for now. According to the latest patch notes, Shockwave Grenades will also no longer be seen in Battle Royale tournaments.
As for further modifications, it’s not yet certain, but Epic appears prepared and open to making changes to both strengthen and weaken weapons based on player input. Let’s wait and see what additional alterations might come with the progression of Chapter 5 Season 4.
